Setting
We were the away team batting in the top of the 7th with 2 men on and 2 outs my son was hit by a pitch in the hand and awarded first base. he was in great pain and was immediately attended to by our coaching staff as well as the away schools trainer and left the field. i went to check on him and when I returned to my seat i found the game was over and my son was call out for not taking awarded base. It seems to be a bs technical call by the umpires. when i approached the umpire and asked him about it he told me he would need to be incapacitated to be subbed out with out taking his base. Anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Yes, I've heard of misinformed umpires making this sort of call, but there is no rule support for it.

Instead Rule 3-1-1 says, in part, In any other case [besides the pitcher], a substitute may replace a player of his team when the ball is dead and time has been called.
Since your son was hit by pitch, the ball was automatically dead, and a substitute may legally replace him.
It would be different if he had been awarded a base on balls without injury, since the ball is still live. In that case the player does need to accept his award unless time is called.

But if in the course of taking his base he gets hurts then wouldn't time be called and a sub be allowed to take his place? Similar to the softball player who blew her knee out rounding first on a homerun. The umps in that case misapplied the rule since a sub can replace an injured player who is unable to finish roundin the bases. While it was a honest to goodness great gesture of sportsmanship and character it never should have happened.

Or am I way off?

Sure, it should be. But if the umpires all chose to not grant time (because, for example, they believe that the player is feigning injury) then the player needs to go to first.

In the situation described in the OP, the ball was automatically dead when the batter was hit. The umpire has no choice but to allow the immediate substitution.

The ball is dead when he got hit. The player is being checked out by medical personal, even if the umpire was going to make such a ruling he needs to inform the manager, replace him or get to first. I just can't see this being a viable solution.
As far as a player suffering an injury when advancing. In the case of the softball clip it was already dead because it was a HR. If it is a live ball, a hit, where he is subject to be put out, then the ball would stay live.
Here's my story ... Several years ago, kid gets drilled right on the kneecap. he's hurting pretty good.. heads a few steps toward first but then, with assistance, goes to the 1st base dugout.. we sub a new guy in. they appeal he never touched first and a young ump calls him out.
I walk over to the old ump and say, "Did tony conigliaro go touch first when he got hit?"
He says, "the guy ain't out, let's play ball."
