Hiya, Does anyone have recent experience with the Caltech baseball program?  I’m familiar with their conference and their standing therein.  I’m interested in the culture, how many players on the roster, how the players can play while handling their academics, and whether the HC does any recruiting.  Thank you!

Ferdy,

Based on my experience on this website, I believe you'll find that Caltech is one of those few places that does very little if any recruiting.   Their admissions rate for men is 5% for men and 7% overall.   Those folks that go to Caltech aren't going primarily to play baseball.    If you were a standout high school baseball player and are one of the select few to be admitted to CalTech (approx 285 men) I really like your chances of making the CalTech baseball team!

Best of luck on the SAT or ACT!

I think there is one current Caltech parent on here and one parent of a 2020 grad. They may see this and chime in.  There are multiple current and former SCIAC parents here too, if that's any help.

The online rosters are accurate, I believe, so that should be helpful.  And if you look at some of the player bios you'll see that playing baseball doesn't seem to affect their academic or even extracurricular achievements much.

Caltech goes to HF Honor roll, and maybe some others, so yeah, they do recruit.

A kid who didn’t get more than garbage time senior year at my son’s high school was one of the best players at Caltech while he was there. I was happy for the kid. He was a great kid. His father was a great guy. He never griped about his son not getting much of a chance in high school. He just cheered for who was on the field. The kid was a Legion two way starter. Legion in our area was mostly varsity bench and JV players.

Kevin Whitehead is a good man.  I spent some time talking with him at HF and he seemed like a good human.  He is the reason they have won a few games over the past few years.  They will take just about anyone on the roster.

Kevin is from Tacoma (I think).  Caught at Texas Tech where he met his wife who is an Odessa girl.  They moved to California for her to go to more college.
