I don't think the immediate area is overly dangerous. The campus area is always bustling with students and you will definitely get the college feel and atomsphere. I was on the campus yesterday and the students were confidently zipping all over the place.
Like any university in a large city you have to know where not to go.

I don't know much about the program other than they have a very nice little stadium sandwiched between the Schuylkill Expressway and a cooling tower. Once you find the entrance it is really a nice place to play and watch a game.

Ridiculous. There are restaurants and bars on campus that keep the streets active at night.
Agree with TR, they would be out of business if it were half as bad as you stated.
