I know this is softball but it got me thinking about baseball.

---“I didn’t want to leave Oregon, but I couldn’t financially afford to stay,” Cruse said. “She came in and did whatever she could to get me to stay. She came in and fought for me to stay and that meant a lot to me.”---

Does this happen in college baseball too? Does/Can a NCAA baseball player go to a coach and say "I can't afford to stay?"

Obviously, it SEEMS like only something that you should say if you are sincerely ready to leave and if you are someone they don't want to lose. But does it happen often?

ironic Mike White and Texas ended her career last night...he has done that to untold amounts of opponents over the years.

to your point, Oregon had lost the HC (which they didn't need to lose, they sadly overestimated their position) and close to half the roster up and left. Getting money was easy at that point, it was readily available in the program and the team was desperate. There is virtually nothing normal in this story but it really is a great one.

Does it happen often, no.
