The Cardinal Gibbons School, an academic and athletic powerhouse in Baltimore for decades, will close at the end of the academic year, according to a fan page of the school on a social networking site.

"At the end of this academic year, the Cardinal Gibbons School will close [its] doors," read a posting on the Facebook fan page. "As part of the consolidation of the Catholic School System, the Archdiocese of Baltimore has chosen CG as one of the schools to close. James Cardinal Gibbons, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever."

About 40 minutes later, what was said to be an official statement was posted on the page. "Until recently, Cardinal Gibbons' administrators hoped that by pursuing every known option we could avoid having our school closed by the Archdiocese," read the statement. "Unfortunately, these efforts did not result in a positive decision for our school. What we do have is a shared dedication to our students and their continued success."

No comment was immediately available from the school. It is also unclear how the author of the fan page obtained the statement.

Gibbons is closing as part of the consolidation of the Catholic school system by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The school, at the corner of Wilkens and Caton avenues, opened in 1962 and has suffered from declining enrollments and increasing costs for much of the past decade.
