I was reading a college website and they were talking about their back-up catcher or maybe he's the third string catcher and they described him as: (their words) "a solid catch-and-throw guy". I've heard this for years and always felt they were describing a catcher with great defensive skills but...My opinion is changing...I'm starting to think the "catch-and-throw" label might not be that great.??? Is this just a nice way of saying he lacks other tools?

Fungo I as well have been hearing this for quite some time. I coach our catchers and my youngest son a Freshman is a catcher. More and more I am starting to think that it is used by alot of people as a way of describing a good defensive catcher that cant hit. I would hope that all good catchers are good at catching and throwing. What separates them is their ability to hit.
