I have a 13 yr old and is a catcher. He was told he needs a intermediate size catchers mitt. Can someone tell me size would that be?

Probably a 32.5 would do it, unless he is already bigger than a medium build. Make sure glove fits the hand + it feels right to him.
My 12 year old was told by a popular catching coach that even in high school nothing over a 32.5. He said anything bigger and you won't be catching it in the correct spot of the glove. The gloves are meant to be small to give you more control.
Many high school, college, and professional catchers use larger mitts. 33.5" is a very common size. Yadier Molina uses 34". There's not a huge difference, it's just personal preference.
Unless you are catching knuckleballs, the smaller the glove the better.
What is the advantage to a larger mitt?? Yes, the pitch is meant to be caught in the pocket every time.
Comfort is key, Not size.
