Of those who have already gone through the whole recruiting thing, did you end up having to change your cell phone plan to a higher minutes plan during the "main" part of the process (i.e.when coaches are allowed to call)? I know it totally depends on how heavily pursued your kid is, but just looking for a general idea. Thanks!

funny cell phone story that has nothing to do with minutes. 2 years ago (when we were playing 14u).

caught our RF texting his GF in midle of game in outfield. how we caught him was, ball hit to outfield. He looks up, drops his phone (which was in in glove), catches ball, throws it back in, and picks up phone. ONCE we got done yelling, we laughed foe the rest of tournament and season. gotta love technology!

My son's coach wouldn't have found it funny at all. If one of the kids on our 13U team did that he would be sitting the bench at least one game if not the entire tournament.

If my son did that, after the coach was through with him, I would have ripped him a new one. I'm not spending money on travel ball for my son not to give 100% on every play.

Tradosaurus, He did sit rest of game and next game. He is and was a very talented baseball player. BUT no desire to play beyond high school. He hasn't played with us since that season and won't. Great kid, just not the work ethic or desire. And as for my son, he wouldn't even THINK of it, but i agree i would have ripped him as well if it were him

A friend, a college coach caught one of his players texting in the dugout. There were little pieces of cell phone everywhere.

As someone who knows the recruiting process inside and out, you will find coaches out there completely consuming the lives of these recruits if it's not monitored carefully.

If you know recruiting inside and out, you would know that there is a big difference between baseball recruiting and recruiting in other college sports.

Can anyone here say that their baseball players lives were completely consumed at any one point in HS by college coaches or recruiters?

TPM, that's funny. I wondered if I was the only one who thought this was a funny topic. My son has 3 or 4 offers and hasn't committed, probably won't until Spring because he doesn't love any of his offers. He is not a total stud but he is a solid ball player who will play D1 but his minutes were absolutely NOT consumed by college coaches.

Anyone who needs unlimited minutes for their kid because of college baseball recruiting had better have a kid playing on the USA baseball team and that's about what , 25 parents in the nation?
I do feel that the question asked was a good one.

The reality is that no matter how sought after your son may be there are rules and in most cases most baseball coaches adhere to them (very unlike other college sports). This is not like football recruiting, in baseball, reality is if that player is not going to be available than he moves on to the the next, quickly.

JMO.
Thanks for all the replies...just to clarify, son is 2013 and can't get calls yet and I'm not anticipating my kid's going to be inundated with calls, just wondering what others' experiences have been. We have a very inexpensive 750 minutes/month talk + unlimited text plan and usually have no more than a couple hundred minutes left at the end of the month so I was trying to gauge whether we should increase the minutes.

Actually, I find it pretty funny. They're kids for cripes sake and every now and then you can expect them to do something stupid along the way. Sure, discipline them and let it be known that this shouldn't happen again and one day around the supper table, you'll have some story to laugh about. Sure, if the kid is a distraction to the team, that's one thing but I don't think i'd kill him if it was just one brainfart coming from a 13-14 yr old since they'll have many.
My son was recruited by D1 football and baseball. I found the most disturbing part was that they would text him during school hours while they knew he was in class. I had a problem with that. The football was a lot greater in contact than baseball. It did not consume him, but he was mid level recruit. I know the Norris kid had to stop answering the phone. He let everything go to voice mail because he would get them at all hours of the day and night. It was also a turnoff and I think that is what most baseball coaches have found out. Baseball kids are not impressed with the bad timing phone calls.
