Read the Sunday Chicago Sun Times, September 24, 2006, page 76A for a very good article on the importance of high school students marketing themselves for collegiate opportunities. The article effectively makes the point that marketing is an essential ingredient for high school students interested in playing at the collegiate level to be aware of. The use of technology is briefly mentioned as now beginning to impact the college recruiting game. I believe it is essential for a high school student to have an online profile that is working for them 24/7, 365 days a year.

All most all baseball players will have to market themselves. Beginning with the Freshman year in High School it is imperative that the parents and player begin to determine how this will be accomplished. Grades and ACT/SAT scores are critical determining measurements at the end of the high school road as to what schools will ultimately be a match, but beginning to develop a profile is key if the player is college bound. This is the easiest step an athlete can take toward marketing himself. Having an on line sports profile can also help the player in the application process for college athletic scholarships. The key is to get started sooner than later. Getting recruited to playing a collegiate sport is ultimately about marketing and getting starting early will give those players an edge. The Internet is where it is at and the wave of the future is developing an online profile that will eventually supplement a professionally prepared resume. The profile should allow one to easily update for changes.
