Tajun Walker shut down Crespi with a 92-95MPH fastball. My son faced him last year at a tournament and struck out the one time he faced him. Pitch 1 FB away..OK I got this guy, FB away foul tip..I got him...3 FB in off the plate...OK I can hit him...CB starts at him buckles him and K...walks back to the dugout and his teammates are laughing...

Walker was throwing his off-speed pitches well enough to keep the boys off balance. Hie fastball was 94-95 the few times I was standing behind the 10 or so scouts. As I stated before you need some luck on the field and in the draw. Last year we had a better draw and made the tough plays. Yesterday we didn't catch the tough fly ball, when last year we made those plays. All 4 runs in the game were from BB or HBP that where awarded first base before they scored. In my two-cent opinion, the team that plays the cleanest games, hits(duh), and gives the least free bases will win this title. Coach said in the paper that our luck ran out, and someone from the other team complained that we weren't giving walker credit for his performance. That wasn't what he was saying, He just was saying that OUR luck ran out. To win a title that 48 teams start in the tournament is very hard. I feel that 10 or so teams have a legit chance. My son faced Walker 3 times, BB HBP K. He felt he was hitable, but in all fairness we didn't hit him. Good luck to all remaining teams, my pick is chaminade. My son has had a great run and is looking forward to now playing in D1. He would still like to be playing for a second title, but the sting isn't quite as bad when you have a ring already. I'll miss this group of boys, but the great memories will never be forgotten. Still lots of ball in the future to watch with 6-7 boys going on to D1 baseball from this class of seniors. Enjoy the ride parents, its for such a short time of our lives.

I watched the LA Times clip of your son's HC being interviewed after the game, easier to see his sincerity on video, instead of reading it in the paper. I agree, I don't think he was diminishing the effort of Yucaipa, in fact, IMO he was giving Walker and his teammates a big compliment. In a single elimination tournament many things have to go your way...pitching, defense, offense, a call here or there...and a little luck along the way! Obviously you guys know that after bringing home the hardware last year.

There was a few big upsets this past week in D1 & D2, and I'm sure we'll see a few more in these upcoming games. Congrats to your son and his teammates on another fine year, and best of luck to him over the next few years in college!

I pretty much agree with CADad. Most teams will be now on their number two pitcher and teams with better overall records generally have deeper pitching rotations which will bode well for them.

I think home teams also have a real advantage, particularly if they have an unusual field....like in the case of Chaminade vs Santa Barbara. Chaminade's field has a high fence that is only 270' in right field, so in this case a clear adavantage to Chaminade over SB who does not have any overpowering pitching. At Yucaipa it will probably be windy if the weather keeps up like it has the past week, so advantage to Yucaipa. Probably the same for Redlands.

Like the article I posted the baseball playoffs are such a **** shoot you never know when you can have a "what just happended" moment. Good luck to the teams left in it.

Oxnard went down, Moorpark won a close one 6-5. Santa Barbara vs Chaminade's game was moved to Pierce College, which I am sure helped them a lot, they won. Will check the LA times and post a link.

Took a beating on round of 16 but quarters predictions:

OLU v El Dorado - OLU

Moorpark v Dana Hills - Tossup again. Moorpark used both their pitchers. Higginbotham will probably start and be relieved by Swenson as Barker hasn't pitched in a while. Tago threw Tuesday. Bit of an advantage to Moorpark but they're playing at Dana Hills so bit of an advantage to Dana Hills. Moorpark has really gotten the luck of the draw so far.

Lakewood v Mater Dei - Lakewood as Mater Dei used their stud on Tuesday. Can't believe any coach would throw him again.

Royal v San Clemente - Royal has Buckel on the mound.

...It's not like the "Juiced" bat in question won the game with a HR, or an extra base hit deep to the gap...it was a single! According to the article, the bat has already been confiscated once before and found to be okay. There are so many bats on the market now with distinct sounds, who's to say they can't change a little over time? The young man that owns the bat has three dingers on the year. If he's anywhere near the size he's listed on Maxpreps, it certainly wouldn't seem out of the ordinary if he went yard a few times!

San Clemente should be barred from next year's play-offs. Their coaches should be released as well. They are suppose to be teaching and when the teaching moment presented itself, those coaches taught the wrong lesson.

CIF rejects protest...as expected.

The Southern Section has denied a protest by San Clemente over an allegation that Simi Valley Royal used an illegal bat in Friday's playoff victory, citing "Insufficient evidence" to support such a protest.

Royal, on good faith, turned over the questioned bat on Saturday to Easton, which made the bat. Royal Coach Dan Maye said if the bat is returned in time, he expects the player who uses the bat, Ryan Tinkham, to use it in Tuesday's playoff game against Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Dana Hills vs Mater Dei. An at large team makes it to the finals. Not sure who is pitching for either team.

Sounds like Mater Dei will be able to bring Hahn back for 5 innings for the finals so I'll go with Mater Dei even though Hahn will probably struggle a bit due to being over worked.

I didn't get out to see the games at Storm Stadium this past weekend, but I read the updates on OC Varsity and the LA Times. Cory Hahn rapped up an amazing high school career with a great game on Saturday. The lefty threw 5 Perfect innings striking out seven, hitting a HR, and making an over the shoulder catch in center...not bad for a 5'10" "little guy". And they say size matters!!??

Hahn finished the season 14-1 on the bump with a 0.89 ERA, and hit 10 dingers! No Doubt, the Player of the Year in the CIF Southern Section! He should probably get some love for the Gatorade Player of the year too...at least for California?

Buckel was 12-1 with a 0.61 ERA and .195 OBP against. He hit .410 with 6 homers and played SS when not pitching. I'd say he earned but won't get player of the year, because his team was beaten in the semis when he wasn't pitching.

Amazingly although he was Player of the year in his league he didn't get pitcher of the year so that they could spread the awards around. I thought the kid who got that award was a closer runner up for Player of the year, but Buckel earned the league's Player of the Year so I can see why they did it that way.

Well, I guess both kids would be very deserving of the honor. Hahn and Buckel's HS career's are over and they're gonna be drafted tonight or tomorrow. We'll see if they sign, or keep their commitments to school?

They are both undersized and although Buckel is a bit taller he's a RHP. It'll be interesting to see how far down each is drafted. That will most likely determine if they sign or not. I don't think of it as keeping a commitment to their schools or not. It is a given that players are committing only if they don't sign professionally.

It is probably a smart move for the schools they've signed with to go after the "undersized" kids with big talent as they are more likely to get them than the bigger kids with near equal stuff.
