What determines whether a school is D1, D2 or D3 in both NCAA and NJCAA?

Amount of scholarships given in each sport and equity. NCAA D1 must have at least 7 sports for men and 7 for women or 6 for men and 8 for women to be classified as D1. There's more but that is essentially what is the important difference.

The biggest thing is the decision by the school to select the division they wish to play at--then they abide by scholatship requirments---there are some schools that are Division I in one sports and Division II in others--many Division I conferences require that all schools play all sports in that division while others do not
