My friend called, his son's coach is leaving the college. The coach was the primary reason his son is going there.   I know here and elsewhere they say don't pick a school based on the coach.

Regrettably his son is stuck there unless he wants to sit a year at D1 or drop down as a soph.

There are many unfair things (the 11.7 thread, etc) about college baseball. Kids being left in the lurch (year penalty or stay) when the coach leaves seems really unfair.

It's why the college as a whole and the history of the program has to be considered as much as the coach. Unless a coach is at his dream destination he's always a prospect to move on. The better the program gets the more attractive he gets and becomes likely to move on.

The downside is you will typically hear go where you are loved. The new coaching staff may not love a player the previous staff did. Or they may not see the potential of an on the verge of success player the previous staff saw.

Getting offers and accepting one is just the beginning of the battle. Then the player spends the next three or four years proving each year he belongs on the field. The coach leaving falls under things a player can't control. All he can do is figure out how to prove he belongs on the field.

The coach who recruited me left before my freshman year. I survived. My son's coach left after his soph year. He survived. They key is don't get distracted. Don't feel sorry for yourself. It's wasted energy. Keep plugging.

Similar thing happened at my son's JuCo.  Shortly after his freshman (college) season completed the coach was dismissed.  Yes, they had a good season (finished 3rd in the regional tournament and had a winning record).  Son had to prove himself to the new incoming coach (which he did).  Yes, it's one of those things you can't control.

Perhaps the key, as I've heard on this site often, go to a school you'd be happy at should the baseball journey come to an abrupt halt (injury, cut, coach change, etc.)

I never cared for that advice. If baseball is a factor in your choice, make it as big a factor as makes sense for you given your priorities and your other criteria.

If baseball ends, you can then make a decision as to whether it is better to remain at the school or leave. Transfers aren't the end of the world. They are often healthy and positive.

Make the best decision you can based on the information you have and your priorities. If the facts or your priorities change, make another decision.

Also, coaching changes and cuts are not necessarily ends to the baseball journey. Lots of players persevere through both.
