Chk it ... Coach O'Connor made a trip up after UVA camp today to catch a Winchester Post 21 American Legion baseball game.  How 'bout that!

Stayed the whole game.  A couple of kids were seen in the 4A state playoffs and were seen again at the Commonwealth games.  As a good friend of mine who is a college coach who works the UVA camps with the UVA staff said ... He's there for a reason.  If he's there then UVA is serious about someone!

For the record, these kids have not done the travel nor showcase circuit.  Just wanted to share if you are good enough, they will find you.

Side note ... Coach Oak was sporting the "Play in School" hat!

I'm glad that the kids are getting attention they desire.

I have no clue why you continue the "anti-travel ball" stuff, TCWPreps. I don't know why you're so against travel ball and I don't know why you continue to try to make a point of it here. There's nothing wrong with travel ball, just as there's nothing wrong with legion ball.

TCWPreps is a recruiting service. I don't understand a recruiting service constantly dumping on travel ball. I think it's one of those services that floods coaches with mail. It's one of those services most people here say, "Don't bother with these services, be in control, do it yourself with defined targets."

I just want players and parents to be informed that you can get recruited from American Legion baseball as well.  For anyone to say you cannot, you are straight lying.

If you're good enough that the coach of a team ranked #1 in the country comes to see you, then, yes, you can get recruited from Legion, or high school. You'll probably have pro scouts come too.

But, if you're not a top flight, major D1 talent, then you probably need to do something else. Especially if you're a D2 prospect in a state (VA) that has maybe two D2 baseball programs.

There are some Legion players that are as good as most anyone in the country.  Sometimes it is hard to get them to attend certain events, depending on their Legion team.  Some are very strict and won't allow their players to do other things.  Some aren't as strict and want to help their players as much as possible.

One of the top 2015 high school prospects in the country plays Legion Baseball. I'm sure he will get a lot of scouting attention.  Madison Bumgarner (Giants) was a Legion player, but he also attended the PG National Showcase and made the PG All American Game.

Legion Baseball is great!  It is nice to say Brian O'Connor was at a game.  But we see him and his assistants many times each year along with nearly every Major College coach. And the events are not in the home state of that many.  It would sound kind of small to mention we saw one of them at a game when sometimes there are hundreds of them.

The bottom line is, it's all about talent!  Legion definitely has some outstanding talent, but it is very obvious where the vast majority of the talent plays.  It is proven every year by the MLB draft and college recruiting lists.  So that is where you will always see the largest number of scouts and college recruiters.

Of course if there is a high school age player that has outstanding ability and people know about him, scouts and recruiters will make sure they go see him.  They will work it into their schedule.  And it won't make any difference if he is on a Legion team or a Travel team or some other team.  But they would all prefer to see him playing against others that have the same kind of ability.

The expression anecdotal evidence refers to evidence from anecdotes. Because of the small sample, there is a larger chance that it may be unreliable due to cherry picked or otherwise non-representative samples of typical cases.

If only it was that easy!  And cheap!

I have been at 30+ legion games so far this summer. Mostly 17u, but some 19u.  Among the players have been handful of guys who are committed to D1 schools and Jucos.  Yet I have not seen a single college coach.

... maybe I'm doing something wrong?

If your kid plays with a stud that a school the caliber of UVA and pro scouts would have interest there will be coaches and scouts at your kid's games. It's why I call it anecdotal evidence. It's not the norm. It's an aberration. You won't see coaches and scouts repeatedly at Legion games on the weekends. They're at showcases and tournaments where they can see a lot of prospects at one place.

I think that's what one might refer to as a "blinding flash of the obvious."

Good recruiters will go wherever talented players play; but, the concentration of talent at high level travel team and showcase tournaments will always dominate recruiters' calendars.
