Hi guys,

Just wonder how athletic schollys are gived to players and how coach decide that. Does a player must be recruited by the coach to get a scholarship or he can just show some interest do a try out and receive an offer... How do scholarships work in baseball? More in Juco... And if a player receive a regular scholly not a fulltrip with every cost include ... what is a good amount or % of your total expenses at school... i.e. Can a guy attempt a 10K$ college + expenses and has with his schollys less than 5K$ to pay at the end?

Also if you know that you wont be recruited without doing any showcases is it better to show interest to college in a close area from home. If you show interest to a school does it is possible that the coach ask you for a visit...and tryout?

Do JUCO school are better for Canadian players (because they are smaller...)?

I found on a site that JUCOs have 24 scholarships and they are fullride grants ... the coach cant split scholarships to have more than 24 with less $$$ also coach do not recruit a lot so we have to take contact with them and show some interest... do automatically we have to do a tryout... because I have a friend that is in TX and he didnt do tryout or stuff like that because its a little bit far Canada/TX only to do a tryout... I want to know it because I would like to look a t southern school...

So just tell me if everything I wrote is true...

A Canadian player is just like an US player - what he's offered will depend on his ability. A JUCO recruits just like any other school. They have a list of recruits that they go after, but like DII, NAIA they can allow a workout. Some JUCOs will have an actual "try-out" day. You need to contact the specific school you would be interested in to see how they handle the situation. They are allowed to fund up to 24 scholarships, but just like other divisions, a particular JUCO may not fund that amount. They may have 2 or 3 only - depends on the school. IF they have 24, different JUCO's fund those differently. Some may be able to give 24 tuition, housing, books while in other states they are only allowed to give tuition and books.
Son

You have to get out and be seen --be proactive in letting colllege coaoches know where and wehn you will be playing

You have been asking question son here for months and getting answers but what are you doing to help yourself---asking questions on here will not get it done

Have you be seen?
What is your talent level?

Those are the two questions to start with
What I did to help me ...

registered on PG website - Received an pre invitation for an event in CT that winter.

registered on collegeboard - I start looking at schools.

I did a pre TOEFL test on the internet to know what it is.

I did a pre act or sat (don't remember) test on the internet to see what it is like.

I succeed both.

Also I took all the dates when there are sat or act test in my area QC.

Now I need to register to one of thoses, take contact with some schools and probably attempt a showcase.

Also I start working out in gym and next week I start indoor baseball practice.

I need to stay in baseball shape because I'm graduated so I'm not playing baseball that fall, winter and spring... like I did the last three years with my High School. I'm graduated because there are only 11 grades in QC.

So I think Im going well with my college stuff but its sure I need help and advise.

Thats why all thoses little things stress me... Because I dont want to miss my chance!

P.S. TRhit I'll PM you I finally realise that I will need help ... I actually had the help of a former college player from ontario but its sure he cant does everything for me ... I need to do some stuff too ... but he's a really good guy helping me with my situation! So TRhit I'll PM you soon!
There is no simple answer to the scholarship question. There are only 11.7 scholarshiops to go around in baseball so they are divided up. Some get full rides but most get partial. The value of the offer will be in direct proportion to how bad the coach wants to lock up the player. You should choose a school where you will be happy and likely to succeed, don't worry too much about the scholarship amount. Some kids get $ for books only.
The other way to look at a scholarship ... not as a %, or even real dollars, but in what is LEFT OVER that you have to pay to attend the college where you really want to play and go to school.

In the best of all possible worlds, you get a great scholarship offer from the school of your dreams where you get to be a big contributor to the program. But at the end of it all, it's really about getting a great education, having a great "life experience", and playing ball for a team where you feel you can earn the opportunity to play and contribute. Everyone has to pay something for that, so it's really a matter of whether you can afford to cover the remaining costs to step into the environment that you feel best fits.

Ask yourself this question: if the #1 school in the nation said they wanted you as a starter your freshman year but didn't have any money, and you could afford to pay your own way, would you do it? Now, that's an extreme thought experiment that probably would never happen (i.e., if you were good enough to start as a freshman at a top school ... they'd definitely be giving you some money), but the point is it's not about bragging rights on $$$ or percentages. Plus there are a lot of other 'intangibles' to simply playing college ball beyond the $$$, like preferred class registration (very important in impacted majors), personal academic monitors and tutors, athletic trainers, physical therapy, etc., that are just part of the program.

Of course, there is some correlation between scholarship offer and your value to the program ... but it's not absolute, just an indicator, and you'll always find exceptions to that.

I am familiar with Napean and Les AiIles Du Quebec. My son's team played against OBJ,Team Ont Inc. etc in the fall but not during regular season. Napean was in a couple tournaments we were in.

Good luck with your ball. We had to go out and get the schools we wanted. He attended lots of showcases in Canada but had little interest in the schools that attended. He wanted to play in warm weather and D1 NCAA. Main thing was that we had to go after it.
What position do you play ?
Three years ago I was a kind of utility player (when I began on the varsity) but my head coach take me to the catcher position... so the last 2 years Id only play behind the plate but that summer my head coach decided to put me also in the outfield ... good result (no errors and a lot of good catch ... with my speed) the coach also took me to fill up some position when players was injured, tired, etc... I played 3rd base, 2nd base and DH.

I can play everywhere on the field but my first position is catcher ... but maybe one day a coach will see me as an outfielder... I dont know and I dont care because I just want to play BALL!!!

Francis,

Write up a letter and start sending it out to schools, that you've checked out, there is never a guarentee at getting a scholarship.

That's where you're at.

In the Canadian Forum I'll post up my letter that I sent off to schools so you can se what all should be in there, just give me some time to find it and post it up.

Email me if ya got any Q's
