So, now that my son is a freshman at a very good mid major program, some of our friends from other schools are starting to find out where there kids are playing next summer.
Can someone tell me what to expect?

I gather there is of course a hierarchy regarding where you are placed but that's about all I know. Anyone who can educate me including things like when you find out, cost, will they get to come home at all? Honestly, the basics, it would be appreciated.

Many times the coach won't place a freshman player until later in the year for several reasons:

1. some teams only want starters or kids with significant playing time
2. some coaches maynot know if there going to keep your son on the team until November/December
3. some coaches want to see where your son fits skill wise before they place him

I don't think my son paid any more then $60 to play each summer. His airfare to Alaska was covered by the team in all other leagues he got himself there anbd/or was already nearby. Never paid for housing and was almost always fed by the team or host family. Results will vary by team and host family. My son did get tips from teamates about which host family to ask for.

I've had three years of summer ball experience in 3 different leagues. Each league presented an extremely unique experience and memories that I'll cherish throughout my entire baseball career.

In the summer of 2010, I played in the Coastal Plain League. In the summer of 2011 I was scheduled to play for hokieone's Valley League team, but unfortunately an arm injury forced me to depart the team prematurely. This past summer I began the season back in the Valley but due to my necessity to take classes at school, I departed once again and joined a team in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League, which proved to be much easier for me in terms of commuting to the ballfield.

All the leagues were extremely different in what they offered and the level of play they presented. I would be more than happy to share my experiences via PM with those that are interested.

Most teams are dying to find a family such as yours. If you have a team in your area check the team or league website. Every site I have been to has a prominent link asking for Host families.
