Sons college team is starting to assign kids to the Summer leagues, here’s how it went...we think it would be great for you to play with this team in the Summer, it’s free you just need to get there. I looked up the leagues and it seems it’s the Cape and then everyone else. Anybody been down this road before? Any thoughts,  advice.

Agree with 9an7 and will add...

Your son's experience with how it went is very typical of better programs that are involved with getting their players assigned.  There is an element of "do what your coach says" but if your son has a strong option that he has secured on his own, many coaches are open to that type of suggestion.  If you feel comfortable mentioning what the recommendation is, many of us have experience with the various leagues and/or specific leagues.  You can also PM anyone as well.  It will also be helpful to know roughly what level your son is playing (P5/Mid-major D1, D2, etc...) as reference to the competition level of any particular leagues.

Generally, it is the Cape.  Then Northwoods.  Then a cluster of 5-6 very good leagues.  Then a large list of established leagues.  Then a variety of others.  It can take a serious in to get a Cape invite.  Many playing in that cluster of 5 or 6 very good leagues hope to impress enough to get a future Cape invite.

Kim, depending on league and team, most of the established organizations provide transportation to and from games.  Most utilize host families to put the player up (there are many threads on this - sometimes the most memorable part of college summer ball).  Many of the meals are provided by either the host family or sometimes on game nights, the team.  This is generally something that is stated as a responsibility of the player but particularly if you get lucky with host family, some is provided.

Typically, when you do the math, it doesn't cost any more to ship the kid off to play summer ball somewhere as opposed to having him stay at home and feed him 3x a day, use your gas, water, AC, run laundry, etc.

The exception would be the few teams/leagues that charge a high fee.

I would consider the Coastal Plains to be one of the cluster of 5-6 very good leagues... well established, well attended, run well, nice facilities, a nice mix of players from across all divisions with plenty of good D1 talent and arms mixed in to challenge a young P.  I think a very nice option for a freshman mid-major P.

Thx for the info.

I can speak on Coastal Plains League.  Middle son played there twice and youngest is headed there this summer.  Start praying now for good host family.  We had good and bad with middle son.  Had to request a change the second year and they gave it.  He went from very bad family with crazy expectations and very little give and take to a pool house apartment with use of family farm and BMW to drive.  Still has connections with that family 9 years later.

What team is your son playing for in Coastal PLains?  (You can pm me if you want?)

Most D1 teams do not let the player pick their own team.  NAIA, D2 and juco are a mixed lot.   The teams usually have a connection with certain leagues and teams in those leagues that they trust on both sides.  The college coaches trust the league teams to protect their kids and treat them right and the leagues trust the coaches to send good kids and that they will stay.  My son had a choice of A team in Coastal Plains or A team in California League.  Coastal Plains team is 30 minutes from us so he will get to see friends and family over summer and his best friend is on the same team.  They will stay with us some and host family some.

The California league seems nice from a strictly weather standpoint. My son had no choice tho. Wow I never thought the host family would be an issue to worry about. College coach and Summer team coach have a long term relationship. I will PM the team.

Your son should receive a contract in which he should share with you before he signs anything.

Just a suggestion, you can request a call from someone from the team as the summer gets closer.

The college baseball season hasn't even begun yet, things change. Go slow.

Most don't have a choice, particularly D1 players as Pitchingfan states above and take note to his very good reasons.  With the host family thing, I think you will find that the vast majority are good to very good experiences.
