players usually are staying with a host family... unless they live within walking distance to the fields a car is tough to be without.

son was 1/2 hour away from the field one summer. returning from road trips are also a pain without a car, busses get in late night/early morning. Player needs to be back at field early the next day , etc.

most teams set up players with a local gym membership, getting workouts in was a top priority for my son, being a PO he was on a different schedule than other players so having the car was useful.

Son got assignment to Cape and we allowed him to drive up. He actually took his mom's new car. While up there he started one game and got the call to Team USA and left within a week. They flew him down to Cary and his host family back in the Cape actually kept the car, drove it around the block every once in a while until he got back after the season. He never drove anywhere except there and back.

In our league (Valley) cars are very helpful, and with our team, definitely helpful.  Going to the fitness facility, early work, morning hitting/fielding practice, late night meals...all much easier with cars.  We only have 1 host family that is walking distance to  the field. We try to match guys with cars with guys without in our housing but if your son is a non-car guy, have him help out with some gas money. Last summer about 90% of our players had cars, which thrilled our housing co-ordinator to no end.

We have hosted players in the North Woods League for 7 years. Most players bring a car if able, which makes their life a little easier for all the reasons stated above. For those that can't bring a car, the Team tries to get carpools together for players staying in the same area. During times when we had an extra car laying around, we would let the player use it, never had a problem with that.....good kids!

Its a long, busy summer for those players and they need lots of support from all involved.
