My 2011 will play D3 baseball next Spring. He is young for a college freshman, as he will not turn 18 till September 2. He is looking at options for next summer. He talked to his college coach about next summer. His coach has some tie ins with some pretty good leagues, such as the prospect league, but not many yet. He has not seen my some play at the college level yet so he would be hesitant to suggest him for one of those teams at this time. Maybe after Fall season. I do not have any issues with this.

Some of the local wood bat teams would be an option. In fact several were interested in him for last summer. He chose to play for very good 18U team in our state last summer instead. As a pitcher or outfielder he faced several of these wood bat teams and they had trouble competing.

So now to my question. Would it be better to play for the 18U travel team and probably face better competition? Or play for one of the local wood bat teams?

If I have not provided enough info let me know and I will be happy to supply more.

Thanks

Hello Lefties Dad,

My son was a 2010 grad and played DIII this past school year. He too was very young for a college freshman (he just turned 19 last week). After high school, his choices were to play for a very good local 18u college prep team or to find a spot on a team in an adult class A league in our area. He chose to play with the 18u team.

The summer before college isn't just about facing the best competition, though. It is also about giving your son time to adjust what needs to be adjusted (maybe to work on a swing, or perfect an off speed pitch). Your son's college coach knows what he can do, that is why they wanted him. It is tricky, but it is possible to walk the line between facing the best competition and solidifying your skills. Also, this may be the last summer for a while that your son has a chance to play locally. Talk it over with your son and see what he is thinking.
Thanks BBMom,
He talked to the 18U coach last night to see how they see using him. And talked about the opportunity to work those items he needs to for College.

The coach sees him pitching in relief during the week, for an inning or two and playing in the outfield and hitting.

During the tournamants on the weekends he wants him in the starting rotation and hitting, may not see much in the outfield.

He is still wighing his options but I believe he will play for the 18U team. He knows and respects the coach and has enjoyed playing for him in the past.

Thanks again.
