Welcome to the forum Coach! And welcome to HSBBW!

It's really good to have Coach's on here (and there are LOTS of them) to chime in and give your perspectives/thoughts from time to time.

Looks like my son plays you guys on Feb. 26/27. I know your program is a traditional powerhouse so I look forward to the games. Actually, I just look forward to baseball starting up in general!

Again, welcome aboard Coach!

Thanks for the insight Coach C. We visited WSCC last summer for a workout and were impressed with what we saw. Of course it's always good to hear other opinions of the place we have chosen to send our son. I know, I know, I sound like a worry wart mom. LOL. That's one thing you don't stop just because your son turns 18 and towers over you! We have also heard good things from a family from our hometown who sent their son to Walters a few years ago and now he's in the Braves organization. He and his parents have nothing but good to say about Coach Campbell and the rest of his staff as well as the school in general.
Vol State looked pretty good. I think they will be right in the hunt again this year come tournament time!

Hey Mike,

Looking forward to seeing you and coach Painter this coming weekend. I am hoping we dont have a weather issue.

I will try and leave early enough to say hello before the game I know that after and getting the fileds done will keep you busy.

If you wouldn't mind doing me a personal favor????
Ask your players to go easy on my kid if they face him Sat. Last he heard he has the start 1st game but things change.

Coach, I do hope that Vol State starts playing to their potential soon. I do think they have the players to.

My son didn't get to pitch against your team due to a minor injury so he was as you could guess pretty bummed...lol. He missed last weekend and most likely wont face Walters this weekend. If all goes well, his first start will be against SW.

I did hear that you have a very talented team with some great hitters. Should prove to be a good year in the TCCAA!

Tim,

I will see what I can do. If we swing it like we did last week your son won't have any worries.
Mike first of all I would like to thank you for taking the time and speaking with me for a few moments after the game. Coach Painter and I were also able to speak for a few moments.
I really enjoyed watching the way you coach, I have always been a fan of aggressive fundamental baseball.

Coach Corn will have will have a very successful career and is more than capable of continuing the long tradition of baseball that Columbia state has had under coach Hall and coach Painter.

I wish the weather would have been better but you and your staff did an amazing job to keep the field playable and safe for the players.

Now on to my request I made earlier. lol as I told you Sunday Mathew in his first loss of the season said your players did an excellent job putting the bat on what he thought were some very good pitches. He was satisfied with what he did on the mound only allowing the 3 runs with the exception of not being able to throw his hard curve ball because of the constant drizzle and not being able to grip it the way he wanted. I felt that your starter did a fantastic job on the mound in the first game as well (Awesome sinker).

I would have to say that for the conditions; and that through 16 innings of play that only a combined 10 runs scored and 5 errors meant the pitchers did their jobs. The hitters on the other hand ?????
I felt we were very lucky to come away with a split. And for the record I was less impressed with the umpires this far into the season. The force as 2nd late in the last game. and the play at the plate earlier in the same game just to mention two. If your catcher didn't tell you,, I was behind the play and he blocked the plate with his foot the way he was suppose to deflecting the slide and applied the tag before the player adjusted and touched the plate.
And the ball was not lost on the transfer at first as you tried to inform the blue about.

I expect to see you and your team again this post season and although hoping for different result if Mathew throws again I wish you luck the rest of the season..

No problem Tim! You son is a fine pitcher. Where is he going next year?

What you saw out of our team is the way we have played for most of the year. Pitching and playing defense well while leaving plenty to be desired at the plate. I had another coach jokingly ask me if we were playing all our games with wood. If we can just start getting a few timely hits then we will start winning some games.

I would parallel our team with a Princeton of basketball or an Air Force in football in the fact if you make a few mistakes and let us play our game then we will have a chance to win.
Mike he has not played since 2003 until last fall when he decided to return to school. Still trying to get his arm in throwing shape and he may be where he will stay. As for where he is going? Your guess is as good as mine right now. He has been contacted by a dozen or so schools but that has been based only on word of mouth to this point. Nobody has really seen him much yet.

Have had a couple pro scout contacts asking if it was him. They said they would watch as see how he does and if he can return to form. For me I am just glad he is back working on a degree. If he can play ball at another college that's bonus. But its motivation for him to stay in school.

I don't find a thing wrong with the way your guys played. Timely hitting does help. But there was a little of that in our game.(s) Your coaching and play calling secured your runs in the first game.
They would have also the second game had there not been a couple executing bo boo's. I cant fault the aggressive style of play your team has. I would rather a team be aggressive and make a few mistakes over the alternatives. However getting thrown out stealing third with only 1 out and him representing the tying run in the bottom of the 9th...Well.... I would not fault him one bit at any other time.

I expect your team, unless you lose pitching, to contend for the conf title. Not bad considering your team was picked 9th out of 10. Oh and for the record Mathew has added the slide step back into his delivery Smile Plus two old pick-off moves to go with the ones he used.

GL with Motlow this weekend.. You need to take them like Cleveland did last week.
YoungGunDad, Good to hear...Does that mean your son should be cleared to throw?
Yes we don't have home field advantage this year. The school started an ambitious project to add, New dugouts, backstop, bleachers, press box, irrigation system, lights and clubhouse/training room. The weather has really slowed construction and I don't think it will be done for any of this season.
As of right now the Vol state game is going to be payed at Covenant College on top of lookout mountain. If there is any wind at all it should be an interesting day. Prevailing wind is out and a short porch to boot.
If you go here it will give directions for you. The top of the mountain is tricky but there are signs to the school. The fields are past the campus to the left under the radio tower.

Ahhhh...so we'll actually be playing in Georgia, huh? How far south of Chatt State is Covenant?

And yes..he has been cleared. It appears that Chatt State will be his 1st game back. He said he feels stronger than ever so that was good to hear him say. He has been chomping at the bit for the past 3 weeks watching all his teammates play and compete.

He could actually go this weekend but the Coach wants to hold him back 1 more week with a BP in between just to be sure.

YGD
The fact he is cleared is both good news and bad news to me...Another opposing pitchers dad !!! Smile

No really, glad he is cleared and I am sure he has been itchy to get back out there.

The college is about 8-10 miles from town so not far at all. Plenty of signs to head up the mountian. Not sure why they would not just use Engle stadium in town. Former double A field and Tennessee Temple uses it also.

My son has had the stomach flue the last few days so not sure if he will have the strength to throw this weekend. He says yes but.....

Looking forward to meeting.
Alas no action for him this weekend. Left after school Thursday and missed practice. Stayed home Friday from class but was going to Roane for the game up until I was leaving. Still felt to bad to go.

Saturday we went to the games but he did not dress. Just sat in the dugout with the players and coach's. The head coach questioned why he was there and he told him just because I couldnt play today I felt good enough to come and support my team.

Coach told him that it was a good thing we won all three.LOL joking of course.

We go to Shorter tomorrow if the weather permits so he will get a bull pen start there. Just 2-3 innings of work.

Now on to this weekend. The forcast has rain Fri,Sat, and Sunday. So who knows if we get them in. If not games will be Monday or Tuesday.

It figures that his season start would be delayed yet again due to rain! Last fall rain practically shut them down from any ball playing.

I'm sorry to hear your son was not feeling well. But he certainly sounds like a great teammate.

Well I guess if the Coach see's it is suppose to rain this weekend he just might get in some innings against Wallace State-Hanceville on Tuesday afterall...lol.

He's about ready to run through a brick wall! lol

YGD
Coach Corn I see that you found some of that timely hitting you were looking for over the weekend. Nice series for you guys. You have put yourself in great position to finish out the year. GL

YGD again with the rain/snow out yesterday. Rescheduled for Wed. It could wind up that he Mathew does not even throw one pitch off the bump in 2 weeks and outside last weeks stomoch bug hes not injured. I think they are scheduled to start laying block at the frld this week. We may get at least 1-2 home games this year after all.

Brick wall huh. Tell him to grab a football helmet thay have more padding!

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the coach ends up using him in relief to get him some innings after such a long lay off. Who knows anymore...lol.

Look forward to meeting you on Sat!

Any Subways closeby before we head up the mountain? Want to pick son up one for between games. He'll be starving as will I!

The only two Subway's I know about are one off interstate 59 at the Pilot or there is one just off the interstate I-24 at the Broadway exit.

Just saw the TBCA page and coach has him throwing 1st game. It's a pretty big weekend for both our teams. Starting the home stretch if you will.

You will be able to find me easy enough. I will be the one pacing and spending most of the time out of sight down the first base line. He's a lefty. Look for a Chatt State blue slicker and a Nashville Predtor Blue hat.

Parking is a premium and a good walk around the softball field from there.

See ya at the field.

YGD,

You didnt miss much but the cold and wind.
Mine being off sick looked like he should still be in bed. He only went 3inn's giving up 3 and could not any consistancy. Sometimes when you just dont have it you can fight through a few innings. Not today. wound up with a ND. Felt sorry for the pitcher that replaced him he threw 3 inning 1 hit no walk ball ad got the loss. Overall we left alot on base as well. Your starter struggled also but other than 1 inning fought threw it and made some cluth pitches.

Second game was similiar in that our starter had the same issue as yours did. Just could not adjust from the bullpen mound to the game mound. A very noticable difference. In fact every pitcher that entered the game struggled a bit when they first came on. Then in the last game it looked as though VS just ran out of pitching.

Well we will still have the tournament if what I saw in your post last night before you took it down doesnt happen. Glad for the split.
I'm pretty sure that he'll be pitching this weekend. We play Motlow I think. It appears that 3fingered makes it pretty clear that you pretty much have to be incapacitated all year, not just some of the season.

It's all good. Everything happens for a reason and teaching that to our kids is sometimes tricky.

I'm sorry your son was still lingering from the effects of his flu. Your right, things like that can still affect you in many ways. Like you, I'll take a split anyday...lol.

Looks like we all will be chasing Walters again. They swept SW.
Not sure what to think of Walters yet they have not really played anyone but you guys.. They have Columbia,Motlow,Cleveland, and us.

I really dont know if the Flu had anything to do with it, He had a great BP Wed, and the oach said he looked sharp warming up. He just got lost out there. You know trying to make an adjustment and making everything worse the more you try and correct. LOL

Anyway, yea your son might not get many starts for the rest of the year but I think coach Crossland could use him.
