Good question and my answer would be is yes, no, and maybe. A couple thing to keep in mind.

1. If a player can back out of a verbal for various reasons why can't a school do the same?
Showcase: YES

2. If the player is MLB draftable material you might want to be seen as much as possible.
Showcase: Maybe

3. If you feel confident and content with the school and have a trusting relationship with the coach why waste the $ to go to showcases. Maybe spend that money on other things, like that new toy you've been looking at, or if there have been recent trips to the doghouse maybe a special treat for the wife. Cool
Showcase: NO

I'm sure every verbal committment has it's own set of circumstances and "feel good" rating thus the question is on a per case basis in my mind.

Terrific advice by rz1 IMO.

You bet! Most common reason is for grades/admissions but occasionally because of injury. Grades you can control...so don't sit back and relax on that issue at all...even with senioritis.

Most (nearly all?) schools will keep their commitment in the face of an injury...but there are a few who have been know for otherwise.
Thanks for your reply. Seems that no one really gives this possibility much thought. Every parent who has "heard the news" responds: "you must be relieved." But... what IF the school did remove their offer?

Where would your son be then?

The players previous options, would be gone - because the other interested programs had to move to fill the scholarship spot.

He is already playing on a Fall Showcase team, but now verbally committed, I think he feels "he CAN rest." You must remember... this kid has been playing ball since MARCH 1st with NO break! (and I do mean - NO break!)

I'd love to see him take some time off (atleast he's not playing a winter sport!) but... there is still 6 more weeks of baseball.

And... Until the ink has dried, it's not concrete.

Man! I thought THIS was over. crazy
hitbombs - I sense you're much more worried than you need to be. A college program needs to honor their half of the commitment or else word will get out that they don't...and then who would want to vebally "commit" to them in the future?

Make sure your son keeps his grades up (no time off there) and let him take some time off from baseball if thats what he needs...most especially if he's a pitcher.

I think you can relax in the baseball sense if thats what is needed.
hitbombs - You must remember that if a school routinely did this (took back offers) word would quickly spread and the coach's recruiting reputation could be ruined. As long as your son's grades stay up and there's no reason for a coach to "take back" their offer before son signs, you have very little to worry about.
Sit back and relax and enjoy your son's senior year and encourage him to do the same... it will be gone very quickly.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Reading your words, I felt a calmness set in.

This process has been so intense and stressful, for the most part - it's been like a walk in the dark, blindfolded.

We finally arrive to what appears to be 'the promised land' and whadya know... we are a bit STRESSED again.

No more. He will take some time off, have some fun - off the field. And his parents will do the same.
