Congrats on a real good weekend for Bret. All he did in hs & travel was produce & then produce some more. Ended up in a nice situation but a whole bunch of schools whiffed on him. Also noticed some playing time & good efforts by Cales & Zagone at Mizzou.
Congrats to 2nd Basemom, your son had a nice game. Just curiuos, In all of the college baseball polls, FAU is not ranked in any of them. For any week this season, just wondering which poll you may have been looking at. Good win either way. Also, SIU beat #11 Mississippi last season. I think you may have meant series win?
You should have checked Collegiate Baseball's Top 30 from last week. As of today, 3 teams have dropped out of the top 30 due to action this weekend. Florida Atlantic, Arizona State and So. Mississippi all fell out of the top 30.
How 'bout those Salukis! 4 game sweep this weekend of Central Michigan to give the boys an 8-1 record, their best start in 36 years. Keep up the great work.
I was there for the Central Michigan series scouting Central Michigan and the Salukis look GREAT!!! Hit the ball well, Koski looks superb at the plate this early.....Pitching looks suspect but still early also....The Salukis look to be able to hold their own in MVC this season...
woodly, should have stopped by and said hello... but then again, I was on the hill sitting in a warm car!!! (no I wasn't one of the "nutty students" doing the handstand on the keg!!!! But it did look like fun!!!) Oh to be young again! Who were you scouting for woodly?
Saluki's are doing well...NIU this weekend...hope to see you down there Denis!
We'll see you down there 2bmom. Weather looks ok. SIU is on fire - 8 or 9 hitters over 300. NIU won 2-3 last weekend at Evansville. Should be a fun weekend. Was hoping to see Bobby & Dean play at Logan but we're playing at the same times.
Best start in 36 years? Thats even before I deposited myself in Carbondale for 4 years. My freshman year, 76-77, the Dawgs finished 3rd in the College World Series. Led by George Vukovich, who went on to play for the Phillies. 2ndbasemom, I never did a kegstand, but we did share our beer with Gale Sayers, the AD at that time.
My bro was in Carbondale Thursday to scout Norrick. Also hit Louisville and Evansville over the weekend.
I was there in 76-77 as well. The guy who had the best pro career was not Vuk. It was Dave Steib (center fielder, turned pitcher). Other guys who made the bigs from that team were Jim Adduci, Billy Lyons, Kevin House (Tampa Bay Football). Don't know about Rickie Keaton or Paul Ando who were both outstanding. Itch Jones was in his glory days.
boy Cental, you are so much younger than me, you knew the word for the handstand thing...kegstand!!
Denis, must warn you, the boys on the hill are brutal! They are really kind of funny, but they don't let up on the visiting team....especially the pitchers that go down to the bullpen to warm up! So warn Brandon!
Gosh, so many SIU alum...it's great to know that the "party school" has produced so many outstanding citizens!!
No question Steib had the best major league career from that era. He was only at SIU for one year and it was 1978. The MVP of that 78 team was Dewey Robinson , who had a short career with the White Sox.
2ndbasemom, not sure why I know kegstand, maybe from living in a college town.
Thanks 2bmom. Always look forward to some of the outrageous things these kids come up with. NIU players got an early dose of razzing. Opening night at ASU about 20 frat kids showed up and sat right behind NIU dugout. Laid into the players & coaches pretty good - mostly funny and fairly clean stuff.
Sometimes college kids can be pretty funny when dealing with a visiting team. Last April on one of U of Illinois' conference roadtrips, the college guys behind the Illinois dugout were all over Trevor Huisinga all weekend. Those of you from the Bartlett area may know that Trevor is 5'7" tall. On Sunday, after 2 days of comments about his height (nothing nasty, all in fun, some very clever), the fans threw Trevor a birthday party. Party hats, noise makers, even a cake. They had a blast and it was hysterical. Didn't matter that it was April and Trevor's birthday is in February.
I have been around the country to different ball parks and whenever I saw that the Blue Jays were playing I would wear a Saluki shirt. Without fail if I got Steibs attention I got a ball from him. Steve Finley on the other hand....
The location above seems to match up with my memory that Stieb was at SIU for just the 1978 season. Not trying to be a jerk or anything, just how I've remembered it.
