Not very likely. Extremely unlikely actually. More likely it's been area scouts doing there winter visit with a prsopect and his family and discussing signability, i.e - "what rounds will you consider?" "What is your bottom-line $$ figure?"...etc. No area scout can come in and make an "offer" on behalf of his club in December or January. They can and do however say "would you sign in X rounds, and do you know that X is the amount of money in that round"? etc. Far from being an "offer" though.

The parents in this case I know have publicly said that it would take $1.5 mil for their son to be signable. Word from them is that the club said they would give it to him if he would sign! This just sounds extremely far out of how I thought the whole process works from the early on area scout visits to actual draft day, but they are proclaiming that this is what happened.

Could you give me this scout's name and number so that I might get the lottery numbers from him, please? Pot is $61 million tomorrow. I'm in Illinois.

Assuming this person (high schooler) is a top notch talent. Unless he is the first person drafted, how could a person possibly know if this person will be available when the scout's team has its turn in the draft?

The player has let the club know what it would take for him to sign.
That's end first round money. Pretty much knocks him out of the other rounds with that figure.
Got to be pretty darn good this time of year for a club to tell them they'll sign him for that amount. But as I am learning anything is possible.

BTW ...this is not a nationally ranked player...I feel the conversation btwn the scout and the player/parents got twisted. Right now only an area scout from a club has talked to the player/parents.

And after reading the open letter to all future draft prospects in the Pro Scouting section of the HSBBW.... which states "One more thing about scouts. If a scout says that you are going to be drafted in a specific round, look him straight in the eye and tell him that he doesn't know what he is talking about. The only thing a scout can do is tell you what round he has you evaluated in. There are far too many factors at work for any scout to know where you will be drafted".... it is far out in left field for me to believe that any scout has told him he is a first rounder.

And Chill thanks for the wise words ... "Nothing is sometimes a good thing to do....but always a good thing to say." This is what I will do when I hear all the talk.

Glad you are reading the articles on scouting.

Don't believe everything you hear! There is a "chain of command". Some parents are "braggadocious" & too "smart" for their own good, much less the player...

Think it's quite interesting that this has been predicted all along not to be a HS prep year for first first rounds.

Yes folks, don't believe all you hear from parents. Take it as a learning experience.

The only thing I have to say is my son received a very good scholarship offer. We had discussed with our son that when asked information about scholarship that it was a personal thing. Never disclosing any information to anyone, next thing you know it is in our local paper he received a full ride scholarship. Think alot of people assume that if you get a scholarship it is fullride. Maybe the same thing could happen in a draft situation. I just understand now how things can get twisted.

I can tell you this, many scouts came to our house KNEW without asking what sons scholarship was.
And they were accurate, and I am sure it was found out from a phone call to the coach. You can't NOT tell them when they ask, anyone can find out anything.

I know that scouts can find out info. I was referring to the general public.

I was just trying to give the poster the benefit of the doubt that maybe someone reported misinformation. I was relaying that it happened to us.

Its probably all hearsay, just as an example, i signed for 250K and the other day i was at a restaurant and saw a guy i kinda know, he comes up to me and goes " hey man, i heard you signed for 7 million dollars!" Hearsay is a powerful thing, i mean, especially since my 250K number was printed in the paper. Seriously, everything is hearsay, if you want the real answer, talk to the player or the scout, get to the bottom of it.

P.S. if any guy told a scout he would sign for no less than 1.5 million at this point in the year....unless hes an Upton, hes an IDIOT. lol just my view later

Why is he an idiot if it is the truth? I realize that it will mean that the scounts will basically say "See you in three years". But if that is what will eventually happen anyway...why play games?

After the 2004 (son was not drafted) someone called son and his family stupid for thinking that the amount son wanted to sign for to give up college was a whole lot more than he was worth.
It looked like son could have been headed for 5th,6,7th round and he was not interested in what those rounds would bring, therefore in the end he gave an amount that ws more like 2,3.
Was he an idiot? No, he just thought he and his scholarship amount was worth more than was being offered. That was his priority.
I wouldn't doubt the player might have given that amount, not sure if the scouts comments came after (unless in form of a joke).
