Good stuff. I think all 8 teams have a legitimate shot but there is something about South Carolina. They have a closer with a rubber arm who shortens the game to 6 or 7 innings. They also have a fantastic clutch hitter at 1b and they may be the most disciplined team. That said, any of these 8 teams have a shot.

I can't really disagree with your opinion that they're unlikely to achieve the College World series championship, but I did not see any doubt, hesitation, backing down, or 'deer in the headlights' look on either team.

I truly believe they have the 'right stuff' to get the job done. If they are not champs it certainly will not be from lack of effort or confidence. And if they do indeed both end up in the championship series I will definitely be breaking out my finest bottle of tree sap!

If I remember correctly from last year you will be urged to pay homage to this well known eatery. If you want to get the Runzas® this is the place to go!

And for fast food generally try chasing down a Culver's®. They offer a wide variety of reasonably priced good food. Don't miss their frozen custard.

If you're with a travel team in Omaha for one of the tournaments I would highly recommend Hy-Vee® which is a supermarket and most have an expansive buffet with a wide range of food which will satisfy all of the different tastes of players and parents. Again, reasonably priced. They're air conditioned and can handle a big crowd easily and quickly.

And of course there's more good steak joints than there are Walgreen's® and Starbuck's® combined. That's a lot!

For other entertainment aside from baseball? Try the Strategic Air Command Museum south of town on the highway to Lincoln. Very worthwhile.

And then west of town is the Boy's Town Tour & Hall of History Museum. Father Flanagan put a great place together out there.

Enjoy.

Redbird: Do the Zoo if you have time or kids with you. Great shark, penguins and ape displays.
I haven't been to the new park and at the old park I always just lived off Brats and Burgers that were available from tents and vendors near the ballpark... (or LSU fans, who, if you say hi to them they feed you!!!)
A friend of mine told me that downtown, just south of the stadium, will be the best places with the best deals. Of course Omaha is reknown for its steaks.
.

I don't know just...Nicola's features 'Whoopie' pies. They'd have to do a lot of talkin' before I'd order a slice of that!

And Tx...if I ever get back to Omaha I'll eat three! In Memphis they load up their pulled pork sammiches with slaw...and they're good. The idea of stuffing cabbage in some sort of pastry creation along with some tasty beef shouldn't chase me away should it? Honestly...I like cabbage. As a food and strategically if you know what I mean. Gotta' hand it to those cruciferous veggies...they can really get ya' goin'!

Wink

Go over the bridge to Iowa and go to the casino! Smile

Have a blast, one of the best bb venues on earth, enjoy!

Lead by junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich who was selected by the Cincinnati Reds as the No. 57 overall pick in the supplemental first round. UCLA got tons of talents, they are tough to beat.JMHO

NOTE: In 2009 Jeff Gelalich was selected by the Phillies in the 41th round, two rounds behind Bum's son. He made a 40 round jump in 3 years.

I am going with the school down the road a mile! Stony Brook! -and they also had seven players selected in this year's draft! They do not consider themselves Cinderella at this big dance and I hope they continue the swagger and do well!

Start em up!-Cant wait to watch the locals tomorrow!
Omaha is such a great place. The town really embraces this event. If you're looking for a tremendous steak, head out to The Drover on 73rd St. and order the famous whiskey filet. If you want a feel of Omaha, hit the Old Market, which is the bustling downtown restaurant/shopping district just blocks up 10th Street from the new ballpark. There's also a wonderful museum in the old train station downtown. New places also are going up all around TD Ameritrade. Visited Rosenblatt the other day -- it gets torn down next month -- for one last look of the place. It's so classic, even in its rundown condition, but nothing lasts forever, I guess.

I've been here since last week and hated to see Stony Brook get knocked out so quickly. The locals were ready to get behind the Seawolves, but they never got untracked. I'd tell any college baseball fan to make at least one pilgrimage here in their lifetime.
Stony Brook picked a bad time to roll up two bad games and that is what is the worst part. They didnt play up to their capabilities. But, We are proud of the local boys and now a lot more folks are asking "WHAT's A SEAWOLF?!" Big Grin

Great year,Great Run... and it resets the bar for future recruits as they now can be told if you play here YOU CAN get to Omaha!

Go SEAWOLVES!
Kudos to a team that has no prior experience (in Omaha) as to one whose players have had 2 or 3 times.
I think some of the wind went out of the sails of the gators back on Gainesville. It just wasn't meant to be. They never looked sharp (even in regionals) but imo not indifferent.
As many know son played for KO for 3 years. I know he doesn't teach or accept disrespect, but that baseball is a game where on any given day any team can win.
I didn't see indifference either. They hit the ball hard, just at the wrong places. Both teams had chances, Kent State just won today. Although I am sorry for UF, they'll be ok. I was happy for Kent State, especially the player who unexpectedly lost his mom last Thursday and chose to stay and play. He had some good hits and made one heck-uv-a play in the field. That took great heart.
.

    "Arkansas tonight...very, VERY impressive."

That was my impression also. Great game...a real pleasure to watch.

What do you think is going through all of the teams' heads now that the Golden Flashes muzzled the Gators? I know for certain that no team will overlook Kent State.

"They're no 'flash in the pan' those Golden Flashes!"......"You got that right. And they're no souffle that'll defalate when you look cross-eyed at them. No-siree!"

South Carolina got beat by a very good Arkansas team and my opinion is the Gamecocks will use that loss mightily as a motivation to get that 'third-in-a-row'!

Could be? I picked them to win it all based on their experience. I have been awfully impressed with Arkansas, but they depend heavily on pitching and defense. They don't seem to be able to generate a ton of runs. That kind of reminded me of what I thought was a 'sure-thing-UCLA' of two years ago that ultimately lost to the Gamecocks.

Will history repeat? Big Grin

I've enjoyed hearing the commentary about how the Arizona hitters initially didn't like the 'too large size' of their new park, but learned to like it as they have now become more adept at putting the ball in play rather than swinging for the fence. That and the new bat standards reducing the 'pop' have them thinking about hitting in a way that seemingly is well suited for the new park in Omaha.

Good points.

justbb - you might be right about Arizona. jemaz and biggerpapi pegged those guys before the tournament started. I'll stick with my pick of South Carolina but they don't appear to have quite the offensive firepower as years past. As Arkansas showed last night however, good pitching always beats good hitting. I am not sure Arkansas can get that pitching performance each night however. That kid is obviously going to be a very high round draft choice.

Sort of a related story...but they swept Stanford earlier in the year in the new(er) ballpark at a time when Stanford looked like the greatest team of all time. The Stanford radio announcer (basically a kid just out of school) wrote all kinds of stuff blaming the whole series on the field and ballpark. He complained something like, 'Lopez just built his team to win at that ballpark but otherwise...'

I kind of pounded him on a message board about 'making excuses' (even though I'm definitely a Stanford fan) and he got a little agitated at me.

But they definitely bought into playing a style that works for them!

Oh well...wonder what he's thinking now? Big Grin
At the OMA airport, heading home. All I can say is that if you haven't been out here, you need to make the trip. I felt like I was in heaven my entire time out here. Nice people and some great baseball.

Add Amato's to the list of "must visit" restaurants. Their breakfast is phenominal. I had the Ricotta and blueberry pancakes.

It was great seeing all of our EvoShield Canes kids play out here.

I thought Sitz from FSU was just terrific.
Seems like he threw his slider more than 1/2 the time and nearly every pitch to strike out the side with the bases loaded in the 6th.
FSU pitching threw hard breaking balls/sliders all 9 innings and UCLA hitters didn't seem to adjust. From the time they loaded the bases through the last out of the game, UCLA didn't have very good AB's, in my view.
FSU is playing well.
The game with UofA should be terrific, again. Not sure I like it but the way the CWS works allows UA to come back with Hoyer, again, on more than adequate rest. Of course the downside to using Hoyer tomorrow is the impact, if UA gets to the Championship round, on his ability to come back and start and be effective in one of those games.
Kent State surely has a TOUGH TOUGH road ahead to beat SC and ARK twice to get to the finals....but CRAZIER things have happened in this tournament! Gotta love the Cinderella story, and we are rooting hard for our home town boys here in Ohio...GO KENT!!! BTW, the young man who lost his mom was our son's HS catcher. He had one heck of a game against Florida and we were all so happy for him. My understanding is after flying home for the funeral, he will head back to Omaha today. Jason is a wonderful young man and our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family!
Good news and bad news for the Golden Flashes.

Good News: Gamecocks are starting LHP Jordan Montgomery, a true freshman, in his first CWS appearance, on National TV, in front of a huge crowd, in an elimination game. He has had his ups and downs in SEC play this season but has fared well and has earned Tanners confidence but that's a ton of pressure on a young arm.

Bad News: Tanner said he will bring Roth in if he needs to. (I'm sure that's what Arkansas is hoping for)

Tanner is now starting senior Michael Roth today instead of Montgomery. May be good news for Arkansas.

So would have the Golden Flashes and the Sea Wolves!

I don't agree.

They would not have had the pitching to get them through to the end.

Their overall schedules were not as difficult as others that came to Omaha.

Now maybe those who are not familiar with the road to Omaha understand how tough it really is, even for the top seeds.

IMO the better teams eliminated themselvesm (end of season) due to tough schedules played throughout the entire season and especially towards the end. Stanford vs. FSU in super regionals probably was a turning point for FSU, it began to catch up. The same could go for FL and SC who stuck it out longer in their conference tournies, which meant extra games and extra work on their pitching staff.

Arizona has a tough schedule but they don't beat themselves up with tough conference tourney (and extra games) end of year. I just never really understood that.

I am not sticking up for anyone or any one team.

I just don't get it sometimes. I am probably missing something.

I think South Carolina is a beautiful team to watch.
In a game which requires focus and execution, they do it play by play, inning by inning and game by game.
They don't make mistakes.
Seems like they force the other team to make them.
They make a very difficult game seem easy to play.
I am not sure I can pay them any bigger compliment.
Their execution is so precise from every player in any and every situation.
They have done this with different players for 3 years.
Wonderful players.
Great coaching!!!

Well said. When you think about this great run they've had, I believe Walker and Price are the only two players who have been major contributors for all three world series they've been in. The coaching has remained the same however. Very disciplined. Total respect for the opposition. They go about their business the right way and act like professionals (rather than college kids) on the field. Hard-nosed team coached by an old-school, hard-nosed coach who also can relate to these kids on their level as well.

I remember how impressed I was with Scott Wingo, their shortstop (his name escapes me), and Jackie Bradley a few years back. Well those guys are no longer there yet they are still winning. I don't know if South Carolina can overcome Arkansas and then Arizona but they have had one of the great runs in the history of college baseball.

Every time I watch South Carolina...and its been a lot this year...I come away in awe once again.

They...just...know...they will win the game. Period.

Arkansas...very clearly the 2nd or 3rd best team in America at the end of the season.

Arizona v. South Carolina: Absolutely the best matchup possible for this year's championship. This should be fun to watch!

CD: Along with Walker and Price, Michael Roth and Evan Marzilli have been major contributors all at the three CWS.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that Roth is the greatest pitcher in CWS history. He has shattered almost every pitching record in Omaha. Even better, he's a great kid with a 3.83 GPA as an international business graduate. No matter how long he lasts in the Angels organization, he has a big future head of him in whatever he does.

As for South Carolina's ability to play the game, so much of it at this point comes from confidence. They believe they're going to win every game they play, especially in the NCAA tournament. They're able to manage the pressures of the postseason and make all the big and little plays.

While I was pulling for SC to three-peat I can't say I was disappointed to see Arizona win. Zona was certainly the best team during the CWS and deserved to win.

I especially loved that a couple guys that you might not expect to be the headliners were clutch...Farris pitched and outstanding game and the backup 1B (Dixon)hitting the shot down the third base line with bases loaded to score two runs to put them over the top. Good stuff...

From a "fan-dom" POV I would take the college postseason over the MLB postseason any day.
