I am hearing of kids getting D3 money, in one case full ride.

When asked how did he get a full ride quote was 'academic money'. Good Student (3.50) where academic money would apply, however don't know of schools that have full rides for a A-/B+ student. Son looked into same school, has higher GPA / ACT, Academic Scholarships on Admin site would be approx 40% of costs.

Do D3 schools have money for athletes just called something else? If so - how do you get inquire about?

Scholarship money for d-3 schools generally comes from academic merit. The total percentage available is different at each school. Best to check with each school's admissions office to see what is available. Based on your son's sat's and GPA, I'm sure he will qualify for an academic scholarship. Good Luck!

As I understand it, there is "leadership" money at some schools. And yes, "institutional grant" money. I guess it depends on how much the coach wants you and how much "pull" they have in the financial aid office.

I know of a kid at a strong academic D3 whose parents had donated tens of thousands of dollars to the program.....and the kid got a "work-study" to keep score while the kid rehabbed from an injury. Really? A "work-study"?

I guess they can do whatever they want.....as long as they call it something within the boundaries of the NCAA.
First, I would take rumors about what kids are getting with a grain of salt. Also sometimes people seem to blur the distinction in what tuition discount they are getting versus loans, etc.

Second, how much a student gets depends not only on his grades, but how his grades stack up against others at the school. In fact, my son is retaking the SAT this weekend for the sole reason that we want to see if he will qualify for more merit dollars.

Some D3s are very transparent about their merit programs. Put your grades, scores and financial data into their on line calculator and see what you get. The admissions officer should be able to explain the merit program.

Leadership Scholarships are not so prevalent anymore. They cannot be awarded for athletic accomplishments such as making captain in High school. There has been several D#'s that have been in trouble with the NCAA for this.
