We, Trombly Bulldogs (So Cal) are playing the Dallas Baseball Academy next week in Georgia at the WWBA 17U National Championships.

Is there any coach/player/parent from that organization that posts here?

If so I look forward to meeting you next week.

The team traveling to East Cobb is a combined team of '06, '07, and '08 DBAT players -- including those coached by Whoa Dill and Ken. The 16U team that played in the MMWS Championship game in 2004 as 15 yr olds, plus Cohoon, Walden, Tolleson, and Kershaw --- pretty nice additions! Smile

Trombly -- several post here with ties to this team.

Good luck in Georgia.

The D-BAT 18U team is a solid team. They run ruled the Patriot 17u team tonight with a outstanding performance by their college pitcher on the mound. He has just completed his freshman yr in college and is transferring I believe to Navarro.(may be wrong) I wonder if Ken has any comments on what the feelings of his pitcher is (ie are the college hitters more of a challenge than these 17yr old juniors in high school?) Just wondering what the advantages are for a college pitcher to come back and pitch against high school kids??? Maybe it has something to with the DBU tourney??Maybe Ken will discuss with us the advantages of a kid playing down ( does it help your odds in front of D1 coaches that happen to be in attendance?? etc ) Just for the record yes I was very mad, that a team would pull this ****. But just like one of their coaches said tonight, some nights are like this! Yea coach they are, especially when you have a college pitcher on the mound. There will be alot of rough nights especially when your the other team.
Lots of Connie Mack teams have college players on their teams. AABC (and every other sanctioning body) goes by birthday, not what grade level you are. A kid could be a Senior in college or a 7th grader, as long as he is not 19 before August 1st then he can play Connie Mack Ball. As for playing down, I think Connie Mack can be better competition than playing in the DABA for instance, and the teams are more organized. I dont think Tim Matthews will have a problem finding a D1 school that will take him with or without playing AABC this year. And for the record in my opinion he is probably their number 5 pitcher after Walden,Tolleson,Kershaw, and Cahoon. And guess what, they are all Juniors in HS. Your team might have got off easy with Matthews.

Get ready for older players next year. With the birthday deadline changing to May, there will be 19 year old players playing while the season is going into August. A player could have his associates degree and still play Connie Mack!!!

HH60, saw most of the game tonight as your Patriots lost 18-2 and I recall the score being 18-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. Matthews pitching was absolutely phenomenal to account for your pitching staff giving up eighteen runs! Maybe Ken should have taken it easy on ya'll and thrown one of his catchers - then it would have been a bit closer like, say, 18-8.

Understandably, nobody likes taking an embarassing arse kicking like that but face it - it wouldn't have mattered if it was Nolan Ryan or One-Armed Charlie on the hill for DBAT tonight..... your team got smoked.

And by the way, DBAT won the second game of the doubleheader 21-0 and pitched Matt Sulentic from Hillcrest. Was it unfair of Ken to throw a 17 year-old DISD outfielder at that team?

Highheat60,

This is Cade Griffis for the record Tim Mathews is the 3rd oldest player on our team. He just turned 18. He has a birthday that allows him to play 18U baseball. (By the AABC RULES!!!!!!!!!!) And Guess What next year AABC has changed the rules to April 1st. Which allows more college kids to play 18U baseball. Here is the other thing. Ken did not make that call, I did. Tim has looked at me as a father figure. Because he does not have one. Tim decided to quit playing in the TCL this year because he was getting up everyday at 5:00 am going to work and driving all the way to Euless everyday and getting home at 1:00am. He said he it was killing him. You would be embarrassed questioning the motives if you knew his back ground. Who are you to ask what is best for this Kid. What are in advantages to Timmy playing with us? Why do you think Baylor was there tonight? Here’s why. I called Steve J. and told him Tim was throwing tonight. Why is coach Guzza from NC State is flying in this week-end? Because I told him he needs to come see this kid. I talk to no less than 4 Pro Scouts today going over our roster (height, weight, AGE, velocity, and make-up) . That’s Why!!!!!!! We promote our kids. Who else will do this for Tim and our other guys? Hopefully all your summer coaches. Have I said it is an AABC rule? Maybe I have. By the way Tim had 0 of the 15 RBI’s in the game tonight. Also Tim is our #4 pitcher this year. Maybe you will get a chance to see our 17 year old #1 pitcher in the State Tournament. You make it sound like we cheated. When I was a freshman in college I faced Matt Anderson (99 mph 1st rounder) he was 4 years older than me. I should have questioned the motives of the Rice coach. How dare he throw that guy against me. How about I mail you his birth certificate? And maybe the other 2 guys. I have said it is the AABC rule that kids can play if there birthday falls after August 1st? I guess I have. And call Don Patty in Burkburnett the Blacksox have 6 college kids this year with August birthdays. 3 years ago the mustangs had 2 college players and my guess is they probably have some this year. The bottom line is you do not know Tim’s background nor does anyone know what is best for him. One thing is for sure I do. I hope I answered your question please call me at 972-387-3228 if you have anymore questions about my motives.

Thanks, Cade...

I'm so glad he's finally getting the "notice" he has earned! It's never too late!! Tim is, without doubt, one of the finest young men I've ever met. My son played with him 2 years in HS & nearly idolized him! They still workout together when there schedules allow. He's a great pitcher & will go very far!

HH60, you are way "off base" & suggest you take heed of all Cade explained. Your comments show a pathetic jealousy & ignorance!
Highheat

Cade has said Matthews is his number 4 pitcher. What if it was Tolleson's turn? He already no hit Carpenter's Mustangs this summer. What if was Kershaw's turn in the rotation? He was 93 mph at area code tryouts. Worse yet, what if it was Waldon's turn? I've heard he's been up to 97 this summer. I didn't get to see the game but 18-2 sounds like it didn't really matter who threw against you. One of the other three might have thrown a shutout. Just about the only thing worse than getting beat 18-2 is getting beat 18-0. This is the Connie Mack league, not the pony leagues. I don't think you'll find much sympathy from anyone who has ever played or coached or has had a son play in this league just because an 18 year old college pitcher threw against a 17 year old team.

You win some, you lose some, and some get rained out!
When you lose, you have to evaluate what was done wrong and correct it to become better, and every young man who wants to continue to become better, does not become upset when his team is beaten, but learns what it takes to become better.
I would love for my son's summer team to play talent like D-Bat all the time, the only way one gets better is by playing more talented teams.

This is a little misleading. Matthews got plenty of notice last year as a 1st team DMN All-Area player.

My son was a teammate of Tim's on the Knights 18U last year. There were plenty of scouts watching Tim last summer. John & Cory showcased all of the Knight players in front of several D1 schools. Matthews could have committed to a D1 school last year. He chose an alternate path.
I guess what I`m seeing here on the replies is that it`s no big deal that a college player goes back to play Connie Mack. I fully understand the age requirements, and have been a coach, and parent w/oldest son playing all the way through this league. Me personally I would not let my son go back ( to Connie Mack ) after he started pitching in college. He is better off in a TCL, JAYHAWK, or any of the other college leagues out there, learning to compete against his, let me say (college level peers). Thats just my thoughts on it. Again Cade shared his thoughts and thinks Tim`s best path would be with him in the Connie Mack League.

For some reason I didnt think that in your original post you were too worried about Matthews' best interest, I thought you were more upset about the loss and how it was unfair to the 17yo patriot players. I guess I could have took it wrong. Wink

That's just it Heathead, your son is fortunate to get advice from a father figure.

Have you stopped to think about the player and organization you are calling out does not have the luxury you speak of.

Until folks like you realize that this game at this level is not all about the final score but more about helping and guiding youth, our leaders of tomorrow will have no firm base to stand on. Only false reality of what they think they understand.

Look beyond the score High Heat, somewhere you will find that it is possible to help a kid regardless of league he plays in or what team he plays against.

Personally, I think it speaks volumes about the organization that a highly regarded player like Mathews would opt to play for Dbat instead of the TCL team. That and their impressive alumni are proof enough that they must be doing something right.

I am closing this thread, because it is ridiculous for a respected organization to have to come here and defend themselves for being very good and helping elite players get to the next level. I also have a problem in questioning a kids motives for playing for DBat. Answered very well by Cade, I might add.
