Even though we did not wear shoes in my day (playing ball out in the empty field) and we could have used our fingers AND toes to count, scoring to 500 would have required real brain power.
Instead, we played "Indian Ball." Simply, the hitter would place the bat down laying horizontally in front of him after he hit the ball. The Fielder then had to "hit the bat" with his return throw (generally bouncing or rolling of course) to take his place at bat. As you might guess, sometimes the hitter just tired of hitting and then "volunteered" to change places..
Usually, this game was played when there were just two or three of outside and didn't have enough players to do much more.
