2019 RHP son is traveling to mid tier academic DIII in two weeks to receive academic package to play baseball. This school is one my son is very interested in and would attend if baseball was not an option. He is being recruited by several  strong D2 and a couple of lower level D1 as what I assume at this point in recruiting as a backup plan.  Also top juco in state calls often and wants him to set up visit there in Jan./feb. I assume backup plan there as well.  Son is 6-4 215 8.5 PG grade.  Did not play baseball this past summer was injured so he is known but not seen a lot .  Tops at 87

My question is how long will a D3 wait when he is offered on visit?

That's dependent on the coach, but considering he is a 2019, I wouldn't expect that they're going to keep it open for long, but keep in mind the "offer" is essentially only a roster spot, as his academic package is not baseball related, if he gets admitted, he'll get the academic money whether he plays baseball or not.    I would think that most of the D2 and likely all D1 scholarship money is allotted for 2019's.....at this point I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for getting much (if any) scholarship money....other than academic.

My 2017 was in a similar situation.  The DIII coaches all tried to get him to confirm early, and one in particular was a pretty good match.  My son wanted to major in engineering, so that was always his hedge to a full commitment because the DIII's he was looking at did not offer it as an undergraduate degree.  The DIII coaches will always try to get a kid to apply Early Decision--that really is their equivalent of getting a written commitment since kids can rarely escape ED.  My son was honest and said he was not going to go ED at any school.

We took the approach that finances will play the most important role in his college decision.  He got some academic packages that brought the DIII's tuition down closer to in state, but my son was honest with the coaches and said because of finances, he really could not commit until he got the decision letters from the in-state schools (who also offered engineering undergrad degrees).  A few of the coaches moved on, but the ones he was really interested in were willing to wait.  I suspect that may be the same with your son, particularly if he is a pitcher (my son was both a C and P and some coaches said they were filling their C slots but would wait for him as a P) and has that level of interest from other schools.  Fortunately he wound up getting accepted to an instate D2 with engineering and is now pitching for them.

This... and what Buckeye said.  Also, with those measurables, it is highly likely that if your son qualifies academically and is respectful with the coach, that door will remain open for quite some time, regardless of how much the coach pushes during his visit.  Then, if his game matches his measurables, he will be able to earn PT, regardless of when he commits.

I know it was mentioned already but just know that the package is not being put together for your son to play baseball. I'm not sure schools even offer academic packages before the student is accepted. Either way, he will get the academic package with/without the sport. So even if the coach tells you he's moving on, just know that the package will not change.

As for the question of how long they'll wait. They'll wait until tryouts. Roster spots are not guaranteed so the best at the tryouts will make the team. True walk-ons who show up to tryouts will make the team over recruited players if they are better. When there is no money invested, they take the best. Obviously you'd have a better chance as a recruited player, but there are no guarantees in D3 baseball.

Every D3 is different. Some will move on others will wait as long as it takes. Some wanted an answer when deposits were do May 1st. Others said there would be a place whenever he was ready even if it was the Fall after he graduated. It all depends on how bad they want you. If they think you will be one of their better players, their will always be a spot open, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Some will say they will move on however they may just be trying to take you out of the recruiting pool.
