Thanks for sharing igball. It recently came to my attention that some teams (in son's conference)are making the trip to DR to do the same. What I don't understand is why and how. Is this considered a tune-up to the Spring season or a completion of the Fall season? I assume WF is on a quarter system to make this work on the calendar?
Does going out of the country allow the team to practice/play when they wouldn't ordinarily have that opportunity under NCAA rules? Obviously, I think it is a great opportunity for the kids to experience another country, culture and language. But I have a lot of questions on the baseball aspect.
Indiana University went to the Dominican over Thanksgiving. Some basketball teams go to Canada and maybe other overseas destinations in August/September.
Hope the holidays treated you and the family well.
What I know about the trip is that it was a great experience and I would highly recommend it. WF started their fall practices later than normal so that they would run into the trip and left a day after finals and was there 6 days. I would call it a combo baseball/ team building and service trip. The games played do not take away from 56 allowed since the NCAA views them differently because they are international. I think they view it more as a academic life experience than pure baseball trip and as a result make an allowance for it. At the same time I think the rules are a school can only go once every four years.
If you think about it so many college kids take a semester abroad during their four years and baseball players really never have that opportunity. This type of trip allows for that type of cultural experience while seeing the dedication that the Dominican baseball players have to get a chance the play MLB (and a ticket off the island).
The level of baseball played varied from outstanding (Esgondido is a top level minor league team) to good.
I just got back from my 16th trip to the DR to put on baseball clinics. We stay at a facility that can house 125 people if needed. The place is 5-star by DR standards and is comepletely safe. The cost for 7 days is about $1100 and includes air fare, ground transportation, housing, and meals. Compared prices I have seen, that is a deal. The only other expense is for any things that a player may want to buy while there. We got to see a game in San Pedro in the Caribbean World Series and Manny Ramirez hit a monster home run over the light pole in left center.January is the time of the year they play their round-robin series games.
