Any player drafted must now sign by Aug 15 following that draft or they become free agents and must re enter the draft. A team can, and do, draft guys to follow them in the summer to watch progress for any number of reasons. But the team looses the rights to that player when the calender turns to Aug. 16. The teams will follow ALL players. Thats their job.

Emanski, the rule is this.
Any player drafted out of HS or college must sign by the 15th of Aug. midnight. If they do not sign, they must "RE ENTER THE FREE AGENT DRAFT THE FOLLOWING YEAR". They can not sign with any team after the deadline. There is no longer a draft and follow process for players that attend Jr. college. A player can be drafted in June and can be monitored until the Aug. 15th deadline. The players efforts and performance could lead to a better bonus or it could lead to less of one as well.
The 5th year college rule is different from the underclass players. A team DOES retain rights to a player drafted after he has been in school for 4 years. The rights are retained until the deadline before the draft the following year. But the player must have a year of elgibility remaining after his 4th year in school.

quote:Also could you explain giving seniors FA (no eligibility with degree) before the draft and any benefit? Seems to me lots of scouts approaching graduating seniors with this option.
quote:Seems your son DK had a teammate and fellow RHP who fell into this situation. But because your sons team made the NCAA Tournament he was not elgible to sign before the draft. Which cost him bonus money because he could have signed with the highest bidder. But since your sons team made the Tournament he had to wait for the draft and then pretty much have to sign for close to a % of the slot amount.
