Eligibility

Yes...either the kid is very good or things are going really bad to be calling up 8th graders.


He will use up a year of eligibility, which means he will not be able to play his senior year, even if he sits out his freshman year. He is allowed 4 consecutive years of HS eligibility once he plays a HS game.

Are 8th graders considered tadpoles if 9th graders are fish?

if i remember correctly, privates can use 8th graders on jv but not varsity. not worth it at all if you are at a public school. district foes will have a field day with that.

Beat me to it...I was just about to start that thread.

Just talked to coach. Son got the information wrong. Just wanted him to pitch batting practice as team was facing a lefthander and they wanted some practice against one.

That makes more sense. The kid must have something if coach even wants him to throw some BP.

Be very careful here. I just read up on it and eligibility standards say that as soon as a player participates in a practice or game they have "established eligibility." I would steer clear or at least make sure the coach calls the UIL before he attempts anything of this sort. This can cost the team (in the kids senior year) and the player as well.

TAAPS put an end to 8th grade participation on JV this year.

TAPPS only curbed the use of 8th graders in sub-varsity sports. If a school needs 8th graders in order to have enough players to form a freshman or jv team; the school can petition TAPPS. Almost all requests are honored so that small schools can field teams at the sub-varsity level.

4sport - aren't jv and freshmen teams sub-varsity? I guess I am not following....

Yep- they're the same. I only meant to clarify that 8th graders are still allowed in TAPPS on an as needed bases. And I must say I am glad- my son is an 8th grader playing on a TAPPS JV team!!

4sport-Congrats to your son, that will be good experience!
