I think there will be some impact on recruiting and on how quickly 2020's and 2021's can get on the field, but I don't think it will be all that big.  Only a certain number of D3 schools have grad programs available, and only a certain percentage of families have the resources to pay for a  5th year of college, and only a certain percentage get enough playing time that they'd be motivated to return,  so i don't think it will be all that big of a group.  But it would be nice if those that want it can return for a 5th year or transfer.

If you give an extra year, it would be a nightmare.  Then you would have the chance of 10-19 players staying for the next four years according to what happens.  I would hope they would but I don't see how it would work because there is no way teams could cut players.  You are talking about possibly a whole recruiting class not coming in and that would not happen.

D3 Athletics are different than any other classification because no athletic scholarships are involved in any D3 sports. By definition this makes athletic competition less important to D3 institutions and the administrations that govern them. My suspicion is that the NCAA will defer to individual schools and conferences regarding their decisions on how to handle the 2020 baseball season. In other words, if your son plays for Amherst and your season has been voluntarily cancelled by the school you are probably SOL for recovering that year of eligibility.

I completely agree. In fact one D3 conference has already canceled all spring sports and championships. There is another thread mentions the Nescac.

Well I am beside myself. I now have zero faith that the NCAA will make a rational decision about our SA eligibility. Our young people are sacrificing so much, mainly for the sake of their elders, (and rightfully so). The NCAA elders just made a rash decision, essentially making a prediction about circumstances 3 months away.  Even the medical professionals aren’t able to predict what will be happening 3 months from now. And these will be the same people that determine waivers, eligibility. I could cry. I can only hope and pray that the NCAA elders will appreciate the sacrifices our children have made and be rational about hardship waivers.

The medical professionals are doing NOTHING BUT trying to predict what will be happening 3 months from now.  Who do you think told the NCAA to do this???  They base their predictions on what has already happened in China, South Korea, Italy, Taiwan, etc.  They are trying to head off an Italy situation, which happened because not enough was shut down soon enough.

The fact is that no one knows what will happen in 30 days, never mind 3 months. Any medical professional will agree with that. There are many different models. No one knows for sure. This is why I consider the decision rash. Is it possible that in 3 months every one is locked in their own home, maybe even under marshal law?  Perhaps. But it’s also possible that it’s safe to play in 30 days or maybe even less. I have no idea, and neither does anyone else.
EDIT to add:  maybe the correct language in my 1st post should have been “aren’t able” instead of “aren’t trying”. I am amending.

The fact that no one knows (and lots of people with way more epidemiological experience than any of us seem quite certain it's going to be bad), is why they need to proactively shut things down.  We've got an NCAA official who's tested positive now, along with the two NBA players, and we're not really testing much at all, so there are bound to be more undiagnosed people out there, including on these teams, many of which were getting ready to go on spring trips.

The right play is to quarantine them all and start testing everyone with a cough. But we seem way more likely to be on the Italian path.  We need a milion tests yesterday, we'll be lucky to get them before there are a million sick people.  FWIW, US diagnoses are doubling every 3 days or so, and have been since the initial caseload hit about 40.  If that pace were to continue, we'd get to a million US cases before spring break here (the moves to start social distancing and closing things down may bend that curve down, even in the absence of the necessary testing, now).

All the measures that are being taken are based on what people “think” might happen. It could be far worse, or maybe not. So what’s the harm in suspending the season and reevaluating at regular intervals?  I am a nurse. I have elderly parents that are high risk. I agree with all the measures that are being taken, and in fact I wish the measures would have started sooner. However, there is no harm in frequent reevaluations and planning accordingly.

There is no way they cancel the seasons IMO, the ivies cancelled god bless them. But is isn’t going to happen nationwide. I will believe it when I am watching house cards reruns instead of March madness

Are you doing British or American house of cards? And I’d like episode updates. Thanks!!

yea no kidding, these events are probably the most shocking things I have ever seen. Full disclosure I like the US version. Every time Kevin spacey has someone killed I think of the Clintons.

The governor of our state actually shutdown all the schools in our county due to this. Of course he choose not to do the neighboring counties or Philly. I assume that means the virus may be international but doesn't cross county lines, kind of the like the Dukes of Hazard I guess. I mean the 5 counties are only the most populous in the state and most congested but that F'ing virus won't go east of county line road!! So for you don't know the SE PA geography much of it is pretty damn tight.

The train has left the station, irrational behaviors and efforts will only accelerate for the short term. People will gossip around in circle and convince each other of even more twisted inaccuracies by the end of the conversation they are in. They will then congratulate each other on the new found truths they just helped each other create and spread them everyone they know as news "they heard" which of course is gospel true and never to be doubted.

So called experts will continue to speculate Armageddon, much like every weatherman during a potential snow storm. It gets ratings and makes them feel special, can someone just get them a trophy?

We have a cancelled every thing we love for the foreseeable future because the news media is grasping for ways to beat the "orange man" This is the biggest scam since Y2K....oh and my lovely wife thinks I am dumb for not closing my company for safety reasons. Bless her heart she thinks I go to work and shake the money tree every apparently.

And to top it all off it raining like hell here and I can't golf today!

Y2K didn't kill anyone.

I'd be happy being wrong, but the over/under on deaths in the US is likely 5 figures at this point.  Exponential growth is a bitch.  There were 197 cases confirmed in the US 7 days ago, there are 1832 today.  That growth would predict around 5300 cases by Monday, so give it a few more days and see if the curve is bent at all.

And for those concerned about a 5th year. Unless you attend a program like UVA, the baseball players typically carry 12 hours, not 15. 15 graduates you in 4 years. 12 forces a 5th year.  UVA mandates their players graduate in 4.

Some programs will let the players take extra in the fall, and they can eat into it with extra summer sessions if they don't play summer collegiant league, which will probably also get jacked with and up.

But playing baseball and graduating in 4 years is not the typical, only if the players take extra hours.
