My son, who is a junior in college, has had two surgeries on his throwing shoulder. One was for a torn rotator cuff between his jr. and sr. year in high school. The other for was for a torn labrum during his college freshman year. The result of making a diving stop at second base.

During the physicals this past week, the college's team surgeon told my son it was probably time to seriously consider leaving the game. The doc told my son it was more important to be able to play catch with with his kids when he was 35 years old and to be able to hold his kids when they were babies.

There was a meeting with the head coach. During this meeting the coach made an offer. He said very rarely does he make this offer. The team had an assistant coaching position open. The coach offered the job to my son during this meeting.

After taking time to think things over, we received a call a couple of nights ago. My son was going to accept the coaching position. I could not be more proud of this very difficult grown-up decision.

It might, at first glance, seem like a sad story, but he was hurt doing something he loves, and now he gets to continue in the game. He sounds like a real all around winner to me. An offer like that, at his stage in life, comes to someone that has truly earned it. I feel very proud for him and his parents. The best is yet to come!
