I used Google Earth to take a look at my boyhood home and the sandlot (we called it the Clover Field) we played ball on. Of course there is a building there now but using the measuring device on there I measured the old field's dimensions. 191 to center and tidy short porch, 176 to right... no wonder we had so much fun there!
It really was fun to look at the high school fields etc.... give it a try if you haven't all ready.

I love Google Earth! When we were doing the youth travel ball and we were not familiar with the field and the seating situation, I would do directions on Yahoo maps for directions and then go to Google Earth to see exactly where the field was (front or back of the school), where to park and if they had seating so we would know to bring chairs or a seat back.

Now, Yahoo Maps has satellite capabilities but Google Earth can give you a closer view.

I use it all the time for the same reason. I also use it to look at college fields and campuses.
I love Google Earth! Streetview is also a marvelous innovation. Just yesterday I was looking at a streetview of my first home in Vegas. It hasn't changed in 30 years!

But this technology is being abused. I found a site where you can search for all sorts of places and see it from numerous aerial and street views. I stumbled upon it when I was googling Albert Pujols for something different and saw a link to his house. I don't know how acurate the information is (since it is the internet, you know), but the privacy issue really bothers me.

I suppose this guy isn't too keen on the notoriety this streetview has brought him.

"Hey, who's that parked in my driveway while I was at work?"

DITTO
Here's another similar sie with an interesting feature:

http://maps.live.com/

After plugging in the location click on aerial view.

For some (but not all locations) you can do "bird's eye" view. This is where it improves Google Earth. The little curly arrows on the side will allow you to view the same location from all four sides. We use it to view certain business risks. Amazing..and scary.

Most fields have no address, may not be the address of the school. BUT! Google Earth will give the longitude/latitude of where your mouse is.

If you have a GPS that accepts (most do) those numbers your all set, no matter what state or country you may be in!

woot
