Hi guys I'm just starting play with my summer team..... Im a SS and not totally sure why but im in a bit of a fielding slump...

It's like every ROUTINE ground ball hit to me, it deflects off of my glove or just hits my body...

My coach tells me that i pick my head up too soon, and that I need to stay down and watch the ball go all the way in my glove....

When we have practice, I dont exactly know how to stay down and "watch the ball into my glove "...

Can you guys give me some advice because I truly love SS but am having a rough time fielding lately.... Thanks!

When we travel to Australia with our American teams, I visit with Pat Kelly former Yankees infielder and now International scout for the Dodgers and President of the Adelaide Bite Pro Team.

One day in Sydney NSW State Team infielders.

Pat told the infielders "field the ball with your left ear"!!!!!

I have no idea what he meant by that, but it sounds dangerous and painful.

One drill you can do is take your glove off your hand and have another fielder throw soft grounders toward you. Field the ball with your hands only, this will keep your head down longer because you have no glove to depend on.

Note: To field a ground ball correctly the coach should be able to see the button on top of your hat. Head down, hands out front, and field threw the ball. Also remember, catch it first, then throw it....
