I was just thinking about this as I read some of the conversations here tonight.

So many of our members have become friends with other members outside of our forums - either corresponding on a frequent basis via e-mail, or taking it a step further to include friendly phone calls and/or in-person meetings. So I decided to ask:

Julie,
Great thread!
I remember first coming to the HSBBW and finding out that Fungo's son played at Auburn with one of my son's coaches son (does that make sense). I thought, how cool, what a small world.

Since then that small world has somewhat gotten larger. Come to realize that son's baseball paths have crossed with many here, either playing with, against, or one of his team mates played with a websters son, or a webster knows one of the players at Clemson. Parents gone to Clemson camp and met son, or seen him play. I even had a parent write to me asking if he could bring Dave some goodies when he came to see him play. One of my favorites, HHH called me one night right after he saw him pitch to give a report, I appreciated that! I got an email once from a former college mate of son's HC at Clemson. And one of the dads son plays with son at school and we have become good friends. Of course the best was that one of the websters dad was my son's coach's coach when he was at college. And this summer got to meet up with Denisr at the cape in Falmouth. Then there's the ACC folks I have come to know......
I think for many the HSBBW is more than just a website for baseball.

However, have been in the same stadium with Prepster, twice I think, and missed him. He's avoiding me, maybe next year in Omaha. Wink
One of the nicest things about being involved in baseball and the hsbaseballweb is the fact that no metter where you go you will run into eith a registered member or a "lurker" who will come ove and say hello

Great community--I cant speak for other sport communities but for me the BASEBALL COMMUNITY is the best
Last spring, 33/34 was looking for a good west coast tournament to enter his summer team into, and I suggested a really good tournament, The Summer Series, in the San Diego area to him. I ended up corresponding with him and one of his parents (itsrosy) whose son has undergone Tommy John surgery like mine is headed toward in a week or so (if I can ever get the insurance issues resolved, UGHHH!).

Anyway, the night before the tournament, I had the pleasure of meeting 33/34, aka Coach Tolan, and we had a nice conversation and wished each other well. The next day, at the end of our first game, this fellow comes up and says "Hi Coach, itsrosy!". It took me a second, but i figured out that he wasn't talking about the outcome of our game, but his hsbbw screen name. We had a nice visit also and we continued to run into each other throughout the week at different fields. A couple times we talked about how neat it would be to see each other in the championship game if only we could both make it that far. You guessed it.....we played each other in the final game of the tournament and played a fantastic game that befitted the tournament championship. After the championship, our two sons are standing on the infield and talking about TJ surgery and what it was like and what to expect.

I've had the pleasure of corresponding with each of them a little bit since they returned home to Chicago, and I'm hoping to see them again next summer if they decide to take a chance on the iffy weather in San Diego. We're lucky to have some really great people like these two fellows, I hope to get to meet more like them along the way.
I think it's the cyber friend thing that is the best - you can ask dumb questions and get answers in return that aren't all dumb, you can vent, ask advice, brag on your kids, gripe about your kids, tell some jokes, voice an opinion or 12 , and build up karma points, all from the safety and anonymity of your computer. Meeting folks face-to-face is an added bonus.

You must have needed a restaurant recommendation on the road.. Smile

As I understand it, the thing one must fear the most from that tree is the splinters ...

This site is soooooo great ... you can come home from a doctor's appt and find a couple dozen sweetheart roses on your doorstep, wishing you well and a speedy recovery, from a group on this site ... some of whom you may have never met in person (she said as she rests, feet up, enjoying the beautiful colors and buds in 2 separate vases and thanking God for such kindness and care in a world that oft times goes by toooo fast.)

Just when I thought I was all alone in this baseball journey, I came across oldbatnever. We've emailed and talked on the phone, and have tried to meet. (Games are never in sync!)Since I'm from a small town, not many of the players around here have college ball aspirations and I would be lost without her since she also has a senior son in the same boat. So, my hat is off to you oldbatnever. You rock!

Also, I appreciate the words of pantherdad as we search for colleges. Personal comments and knowledge far away heresay!

And to all the rest of you - thanks for enriching my knowledge of the recruiting process and enriching my life by your posts. May our paths cross someday!

Hence the "scary" part; he's that smart yet still willing to wear it! Gotta have some fun though, right? Tell him to stay away from the guy wearing the "skirt" though. He's got a helmet and body armor for protection, a sword to cut fiesty trees down and a horse for a quick getaway. Big Grin

Anyone that thinks that trees aren't scary, remember the scene from the Wizard of Oz?

Concerning friendships and the hsbaseballweb, wow, I could tell tales of what this site has done for me and my kids. First, thanks to the Head cook and bottle washer for creating the site and to Julie for continuing it in such a fine tradition. I've talked to so many but want to single out conversations with gotwood4sale, TR Hit and swingbuster since I was able to put more than just "type" to their presence on the site. Julie is such a fantastic person and I've shared some stories about my girl with her. Glove man and others gave us such a scare with the various hurricanes and we worried for their families. I've had the opportunity to speak to Glove Man and he is a great guy. (Although a bit misguided since he roots for those stros.) I've received so many pms that I have numerous pages and should really go and clean some of that up. Offers to help financially with my diamond after our tornado have come in and I received another offer yesterday to help. Many colleges have called to talk and send pms about my players. I remember one college calling about "perceptions" and that I shouldn't discount what they have to offer for my kids. I NEVER DO! I could list 4 universities in Illinois that have either used pms or due to this site given me phone calls concerning recruiting my kids and so, I'm grateful. As I've often posted, this site will be exactly what you want it to be. We can all remember about a year ago when we were besieged by some posters with a specific agenda and yet, that was handled with class and those posters are no more. Many of us owe a huge debt for this site. JMHO!
CoachB25:

Thanks for the nice comment...the advice you offered during our conversations was quite helpful as I recall. I'm going to swing by sometime with my son, who aspires to be a baseball coach, so that he may meet with you and learn something positive...I'll call in advance.

BTW...if our visit is near Christmas would you be willing to share some of that great Christmas chili?
Thanks Lovethatbaseball, look forward to meeting you in person.....

This truly is a wonderful site and the friendships I have made on here, these past 4 years are wayyyy to many to list and they have been such a great form of cybersupport and cyberlove, it truly is an extension of family.....

Time and time again my parents and my nonbaseball friends question the amount of time I spend doing baseball stuff and my constant reply to them is:

I love baseball, I love what the sport has taught my son, I love that I can sit outside on a beautiful day with all my friends as I watch my son play this great game with 9 of his closest buddies and most of all I love the friends I have met along the way.......there is an unspoken bond with the baseball friends I have made we understand each other so well and in the end we all truly want the same thing..............for our son's to be healthy, happy and successful on and off the field...............and in the years to come when baseball is no longer a part of my son's life it will still be a part of mine in the friends I have made along the way.

Thank you for this great means to meet baseball/family-friends with the same passions and interest.....
