One of my best friends and coaching buddies, Mark Flatten, moved to Frisco, TX this past summer. He is coaching baseball and football at Centennial HS in Frisco and may be coaching with the Dallas Mustangs as well. Mark is a tremendous person and a great coach. The baseball community in that area is lucky to have him.

Mark is doing some heavy recruiting in terms of getting other So Cal coaches to move out there (myself included!). I have never been to Texas and was hoping to get this thread going so I could get a better feel for what life and baseball is like there.

Thanks for your time and input on this topic.

PS. If anyone in the Frisco area runs into Mark, say hello!!!!

Hi Steve,

Well, there no place like Texas! One slogan: "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could"...
Another is, "Everything is bigger in Texas".
Baseball is HUGE here, very competitive & great fun! Texas is a hotbed for talent & the business end of it is still growing.
Your friend made a good decision! Smile Frisco & Mustangs, very good!

For both HS & college, here are only a few sources to get you started. Many, many more, as I'm sure other fellow Texans will add.

Some of the strongest college programs.
Check out Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, Southland Conference, Mountain West Conference.

We are region 14 & 5 for Juco's, with Navarro, San Jacinto North, Weatherford, & Grayson who get some great talent & are known for it. Many other JUCO's of note, too.

High School Sports (& other extracurricular or academic groups) is "governed" by University Interscholastic League, neccessary, but ...
Roll Eyes pull_hair http://www.uil.utexas.edu.

High School Baseball magazines:
http://www.texasbaseballnews.com (membership)
http://thsbmag.scout.com/ (membership w/ Rivals)

College Summer Baseball, see Texas Collegiate League, based out of McKinney, Tx: http://www.texascollegiateleague.com

DFW Area: http://www.bbidallas.org & http://www.lonestaraba.org are the major leagues for select. There are others & Some very good teams that are tournament/showcase do not belong to leagues. There are also a couple HS off-season leagues, but someone else will have to fill in here.

Houston area: http://www.houston5Abaseball.com a webring of "all things baseball" for High School & Select in Central & South Texas... much like this website.

Newspapers: Dallas Morning News, Ft. Worth Star Telegram, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Light, Austin American Statesman

Unfortunately, the DFW area doesn't yet have a site like Houston 5A baseball, that is a consolidated source for South & Central Texas Baseball community on the High School level. I think they may expand one day, to add this area. It would be great to have it evolve into Texas 5A Baseball, eventually. (hint, hint, RB! Wink)
That site includes each class, 4A, 3A, 2A, & 1A, & Private schools,as well. very comprehensive.

Good luck to your friend, & "what are you waiting for?"

Ummm, bbmom, the San Antonio Light has been gone for about 15 years. The Express News is the only one left.

Texas is home to the best select ball in the nation. Teams like: Austin Slam, Columbia Angels, Dallas Mustangs, Dallas Tigers, DBAT, Houston Heat, Houston Kyle Chapman, South Texas Sliders and many more. This group has racked up some nice finishes in the WWB in the last few years. Premeire Baseball is based out of Texas.

There are some beautifully maintained HS fields even in small towns like Brownwood, Cleburne, Corsicana, Hewitt and Shiner. And some very nice fields at large complexes.

Incredible D1 baseball: A&M, Baylor, Rice, Texas Tech, tu, TCU, UH. The great JUCO programs and relatively new Texas Collegiate League mentioned by bbmom.

Solid minor league programs, with the Round Rock Express and San Antonio Missions having done very well in recent years.

It just doesn't get any better...
Coach,

Baseball in Texas is like baseball in California -- there are an abundance of excellent players and an over-abundance of teams. Kids and their parents are passionate about it -- and many commit to it as an only-sport (another topic for another thread).

You can find baseball at every turn -- very good HS competition, top-rate JUCOS, and college baseball at every level...in addition to the pro game. There are state-of-the-art minor league ballparks in Frisco, Austin, San Antonio, and San Angelo. There are wonderful JUCO parks (like Weatherford) -- fantastic fields for mid-level college baseball (three in Abilene) -- top-rate HS fields (like Duncanville) -- and D1 parks that are near-perfect (Baylor, Rice, SHSU). The teen-age players in Texas have opportunities to play on these fields -- HS games, summer tournaments, showcases, etc....which helps fuel the passion.

Houston HS baseball (overall) will compete with anyplace in the world. But I'm from north Texas Smile

Concerning living in north Texas -- no Laguna beach, no mountain escapes. Also, no state income tax, no shortage of teaching/coaching opportunities -- and our baseball moms are top-rate! I was going to mention less traffic than in California ------ but you're considering Frisco. Smile

Without getting into a discussion that may lead to controversy (I can always hope) -- you will find that football remains king in Texas. In north Texas, finding the top black athletes playing baseball is somewhat rare. Perhaps it is like that in California also. The instruction tends to favor pitching and hitting (as expected) -- I wish there was a little more emphasis on defensive improvement by private teachers.

You'll like Texas. We welcome your experience in north Texas if you decide to move. Look up Cade and Kyle Griffis at DBAT -- the reputation of Trombly baseball speaks for itself.

-PD

OOPS, forgot to mention the Texas Collegiate League -- more good baseball in north Texas.

Coach, since I am from CA, I thought I might post a little on a non baseball view. My son played in San Antonio and we travelled a lot with him.
The Texas Hill Country is really beautiful. Rolling hills/green and tons of Oak trees. If you are thinking seriously, I would suggest you look at San Antonio to Austin up to Georgetown, the I -35 corrider they call it I think. Quite a bit different than Nothern TX in terms of the country. Still very good baseball in high school/college, summer, etc.
To give you an illustration, my son had a teammate from the San Diego area. On the family's first visit, they made a choice to move to San Antonio. My guess is the property they purchased, which was beautiful and large, probably cost as much as the mail box in San Diego. Housing values are a very nice value there. Smile Downside, it is hot, hot, hot... and humid.
No State Income Tax is a big PLUS but the property tax can be sometimes be higher than most parts of the country.

One word of caution, whether you move here or visit a red traffic light in the DFW/Metroplex seems to mean the same as a Green light so you have to be very, very careful. I have never seen sooo many people run red lights in all my life... Eek

Haven't been back to CA. in quite a few yrs but was recently back in AZ and I will say they don't run the lights there as much as here must be the fact that they have those camera's that will take your picture, as you run the light, and then surprise, surprise you find a ticket/fine in your mailbox one day........

Congrats on your son's announcement, TULANE...... Very exciting news and time for you. How is your newest player/transfer. PM if you get a chance.

Texan, heard about Houston. Never went! Razz

Have been told by several sources there are more baseball scouts on the I-35 corridor than anywhere in the US. Any truth?
Couple of things about Northern CA that I prefer over San Antonio. Average temperature here is 75 degrees. Humidity...non existent. No tornado things or hurricanes, not even a warning. If I want snow, can drive 4 hours. Ocean, 20 minutes away. High A ball...that's 25 minutes. Giants...about 30 minutes. Thing I don't like...taxes. We have sales, income, property and any other kind the politicos can impose.
We truly loved San Antonio/Austin though. Very nice people. A group of folks who were great friends and wonderfully generous with our son. Darn good barbeque, too.
