It seems to me that in the last few months, this site has been watered down with "funny" stuff. When something is posted in the General Items forum that is a somewhat serious question, it may be answered with a good answer, then there is all of these off-kiltered answers after. Then the topic never goes back. I mean look at the start of the 'quotes' thread and look at it as it goes down. It is ok to have fun in these threads, but this has turned away from a baseball site and into a joke page. There is the Unusual forum for that. JMO noidea

AK ...
I am sure we can all understand your frustration when a seemingly serious thread gets hijacked and becomes humorous instead of serious. And I believe that your point is valid but would also like you to consider this: Threads on message boards seem to develop a personality all their own, whether they turn funny or downright mean spirited and nasty or outright naughty. Personally, I prefer the funny to the nasty or the naughty and find that it is pretty easy to tell which way it is going without reading every post. Then I just put it on my 'ignore' list.

You are right that posters can take the humor to another forum ... either the unusually unusual, the ladies' lounge, or the men's only forum. And perhaps you have given some of our posters food for thought. And hopefully the board will stay informative but remain lighthearted when it seems appropriate.

Appreciate your good thoughts on this subject ... I know it will give me cause to question some of my responses.

You called me out AK...guilty as charged! I'll go cower in the light-hearted forums...perhaps after you age a few more decades you may come to appreciate a humorous spin on a serious, cranky, selfish world...

I can sincerely appreciate your enthusiasm for learning...especially about baseball...I applaud you for that...your learning curve is near vertical I'm certain.

My learning curve has been flat-lining for longer than I can remember...it's probably in decline...but even considering that, I have enough sense and accrued wisdom to know that lessons can be learned...even by an old decrepit, dog like me.

AK...I will try very hard not to muss up the serious stuff that is discussed here on the HSBBW...if I do that for you and others, will you and others come around the lame forums for a wee bit of fun and frivolity?

Have yourself a very successful season up there in Seward's Follyland....dang it...there I go again!

Got Wood,
I am not targeting just you, but every single post, every single on you put something weird in there. Most of the time don't mind it, but when someone is trying to get some serious answers, it can get discouraging when your question is ignored. I like the jokes better then the wars, but like the good one such as Bullwinkle or Cong, they dont post a joke or 5 in every thread. Thats it. Thanks for the understanding.
ladyNmom, you bring up good points. I love the jokes and the fresh air that this site has been since last summer. I took a break because it became to monotonous and stale because people fight over dumb things.
You have a PM about my progress.

got wood, don't go anywhere, I love the jokes, especially when they're added with a comment as well! The karma thread was hilarious and most of your stuff is. I just wanted to put in perspective the direction tis site may be running, and I think that are others that may agree with me a touch. I don't want to be blunt or make an enemy with ANYONE. Thanks gotwood and all for everything.

I understand it can be very frustrating, especially when you are not getting the serious answers you are looking for.

Threads do get sidetracked - some with jokes, some with cyber boxing matches.

I also understand that once a thread takes one of these odd twists it is really hard to get folks back on the original train of thought.

You could get gutsy and say you enjoy the banter, but would like to get back to the original message - but be prepared, and then hope you're good at dodgeball.

Sometimes it happens simply because no one really has a serous reply left to offer.

You will find that some threads never get more than one to two replies to begin with. Others get 40, but only one to two replies have any substance related to the original question. Not much difference between the two really.

Good luck and keep posting. After all, you have how many replies to this thread and it hasn't spun off too far yet. There is hope for us all.

AKbaseball20...

GREAT POST!

I resemble that remark, and am guilty as charged...and believe yours is a very valid observation...

Even though I am a purveyor of the silly, inane and wierd at times, I too have wondered the same...

After some rumination...My experience here is much like AParent....Threads with real staying power manage to bust through every effort by me, JT and The Wood Man to stop them...AND IT FRUSTRATES ME!

Sorry, Sorry...there I go getting silly again...Sorry...a million aplogies...

Honestly and seriously....while I too believe the humor and silliness has increased, I am not convinced that it is a bad thing, and looking back I see very few threads that were REALLY hyjacked, rather a few turned naturally because they are on very weak legs...and looking back I see very few people who do not get a straight answer..if the question/topic/subject is good...

I would also add that while some of us may be silly at times I think you'll find most of the sillies DO take the time to add knowledge, experience and encourage, and while silly have added something to the site as well.

I for one will try to be more sensitive...

Yours in karma

Cool 44
AK, it is a great post...but I had to go back and read it again just to remember! I know I often forget original post when I'm finished reading through thread and only after I reply do I notice it is off the original intent. I did it today in the 750 thread. Sorry about that.
Got, you are too funny!... .caused me to spit out my coffee on more than 1 occasion. TR, I also greatly appreciate your serious side, I bet you are not near as cranky as I think you are.
AK,

A little perspective.

Sometimes we get folks on here who complain about the intensity of a topic.

Other times - like you have pointed out - we get complaints about not being serious enough.

When all is said and done - it all disappears into the cyber netherworld.

IMO - Take whatever you think is good stuff - and ignore whatever you think is bad stuff.

Very simple in the cyber world. Personally - I think you should be applauded for speaking your mind with very direct and truthful thoughts.

And most importantly - when you are not on the board - run like a wild dog and hit the cr** out of the ball.

Exactamundo!

...this is exactly why we need Woody, JT and others...

For example....while I am sure that I could learn a GREAT deal about coaching aspects of the game, and might evn offer some insights after 30 years...frankly I won't go near the instructional area...Went there once and it did not go well....way to contentious, not enough humor....way to many experts not enough students...

There must be a balance.
I've been biting my tongue......but, I have to say that when you started posting AK, as a new member, you postedv incessantly....it seems every time I logged on and looked at the list of replies down through the Forum headings, every one had been replied to be AKbaseball.

Now you're calling out someone who you see doing the same. Gotwood has a son playing college ball. He has given much good advice and GREAT amounts of motivation and pat-on-the-back support to new members and old, all here in this fabricated community to learn, to get support and, yes, to get patted on the back once in awhile.

I don't think that what you said to him was necessary, especailly as he is an adult with grown children older than you. It doesn't fit my picture of the natural order, I guess.

That's all. You know I've tried to help you personally, AK, so don't take this personally. I have nothing against you and will try to help you any time. Just thought you were a little rough on Mr. Wood.
Krakatoa, this is very true, back then I posted on just about everything. On a few occasions, I posted some answers such as " I don't know the answer". It was brought to my attention that if everyone gave that response to everything they didn't know, this site would be terrible. Since that happened, I have tried to limit my postings to things I have knowledge on. I didn't start this topic to chastise anyone, becuase I don't have the authority to do so. I was just trying to voice an observation, thats all. I know my postings before were pretty petty, and I have tried not to do so anymore.
Have been watching this thread and thought I would post.
AKBaseball,
I think that you made some very valid points in your post. You handled it well (your first post here in funny junk), not calling anyone out in particular.

Going back over the topic, Quotes, I see that some posts were deleted. However, I have figured out that after GW's original post, there were 18 that followed that had nothing to do with the original topic. There was no harm done, as Aparent points out, this happens all of the time. Something we either get used to, choose to ignore or go away. I would rather see humor than the flaming.

Krak,
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the humor that goes on here, and have contributed some myself and even gottten off topic. But I think that AK handled himself very well, much better than some "grown ups" have done.
I think your comments to him have been unfair and unkind and if you had something on your mind, you should have sent a pm. That would have been the adult thing to do.
And AK, being that you were addressing an adult, who shows no mean spirit here, you should have given him that respect by directing comments to him in a pm.
JMO.
