It went to the bottom of the 11th inning with the score tied 8-8.

College Of Marin's (COM) coach Steve Berringer decided not to run the suicide squeeze with a runner on third and two outs.

The pitcher from Napa Valley College saw the runner on third break for home and tried to to rush his delivery and he overthrew the pitch.

Catcher Kenny Simmons, took the game into his own hands, hustling down the line, flung himself hard at home plate, stole home and scored the winning run to give the Mariners a hard fought victory 9-8.

There were many good plays in the game but Kenny Simmons will always be remembered for his outstanding achievement.

COM finishes the season 23-5 in league and (31-11-1) overall.

Now onto the playoffs.

Mariners steal win from Napa, clinch championship

I hope that all of the many adults along the way steer him in the right direction. I trust that they will...he's got a bright future ahead of him if he goes about it properly.

In regards to Shep...I'm sure he is backing you up. From his post, the point I take away is that young players can sometimes be identified as a prospect.

Shep may come take a look at this Potter kid!

Again, thanks for the update...looking forward to more.

Look over me, it's been a bad week. dummhead

Evan isn't any relation, he's on the same tea as my two sons. Just a great kid who has some talent.
Happy Belated 23rd Birthday to Ryan Patterson of the Dunedin BlueJays who I just witnessed a hitting exhibition to remember and game only in the top of 7th inning when I departed premises. Three homeruns for the youngest outfielder, RYAN PATTERSON on team with possibility of at least one more AB. fasttrack recommendation based on what I've seen in three games and fasttrack for Ricky Romero/LHP for Dunedin as well. peace, Shep
Good week for Tanner. 10/13 this week, 3 walks, 1HR, 3 2B, 12 Runs Scored, 13 RBI's, 12 Stolen Bases (Stole Home once and 3B 3 times). He is probably most happy with his defense, 0 errors this season, thats been a struggle for him, and he worked on it a lot over the winter. Let's hope all these boys can keep it up for many years to come.
Last game tonight against the undefeated JV team in our league. Son's team won 5 to 0. Team ended the season on a 7 game winning streak. Son went 2 for 3 with one caught at the fence. His 3 best swings of the season. He ended the season with a BA:320. Had fun his Freshman year. Made a lot of new friends and is looking to trying out for Varsity next year.
Just a short note to compliment Lakeland Tigers pitching staff for a very impressive series against Vero Beach Dodgers. I attended every game of series and here to attest to the fact that somebody is doing a great job in Detroit's front office, player development, coaching and scouting department.

Had the pleasure of spending time with VP and Assistant GM who was an officer and a gentleman. Very, very professional, I might add, and easy to see why Marlins won World Series while he was there. peace, Shep

Shep, I lived right down the street from Marchent Stadium home of the Lakeland Tiger's in 1971, For 6 month's. But it was the off season.
I was 14 yr's old, and My dad was working on Walt Disney World, in Construction of the Park.
Just think what the EH could have Achieved if he only had the Influence of some Big Leaguer's. I could of Learned how to Chew Tabacco. LOL

Wednesday night was great, Both son's hit homeruns in the same game. Michael (freshman SS) took one out with 2 outs in the bottom of the 2nd while Joe led off the 3rd with a monster shot. What a proud moment... Joe is 18 for his last 26, with 3 hr's, 4 doubles and 2 triples.....Things are heating up.

Last night on the way home from their game the boys were involved in a bad accident (roll over). The truck is totaled, what a mess. Michael was fine with no injuries while Joe has stitches in his forehead and more in his cheek. Thank God for seat belts...
After looking at the truck, and seeing the boys standing there OK when I arrived, made baseball is so trivial......

Many emotions in just 24 hours..
Just a short note to congratulate FL STATE LEAGUE LHP, Scott Elbert who has been very strong his past few outings with 92-94FBs and nasty sliders with a plus change-up to boot Smile His W-L record is "not" indicative of his progress/potential and a perfect example of why stats are not end-all in evaluations. He has gotten "NO" run support in his starts. His ERA is just over 2 even though win/loss record the opposite of what is considered Cy Young Smile.

Scott currently pitches for Vero Beach Dodgers.

Another congratulations to Kevin Ardoin who is a RHP in FL STATE LEAGUE who has what it takes to reach Bigs with a variety of out-pitches and great command.

Kevin currently pitches for Lakeland Tigers.

Would also like to congratulate Blake Johnson who is a RHP in FL STATE LEAGUE who also has been extremely effective this season for Vero even though his W-L record doesn't reflect it.

God's Speed, Shep

Would like to congratulate Derek Griffith, LHP for Clearwater Threshers(PHILLIES), and AJ Happ, RHP for Clearwater Threshers(PHILLIES), for continued great success at next levels in Philadelphia's farm system. Both have ERAs at about 2.00 thusfar in FL STATE LEAGUE and have great command and desirable pitching qualities/ characteristics to reach the BIGS. God's Speed to these two fine prospects currently on Shep's fast-track list. The Phillies are fortunate to have these fine prospects who show much promise at current time. peace, Shep

My Daughter's team won her softball tournament in Springfield, Illinois. She had a great tournament and threw 2 one hitters in the tournament. This after throwing a no hitter on Friday night. Just_Learning's Daughter also had a great weekend and had a key at bat in one of the games that set us up to advance into the Championship Game.
Before I leave to Sebring to watch North/South
East/West FL state HS All-Star games I wanted to compliment and congratulate the following players: Jeffrey Marquez-RHP Tampa Yankees, Brett Smith-RHP Tampa Yankees, Matt Lindstrom(Better Known as, THE BEAST because of
aggressiveness mixed with 100MPH fastballs) Matt is currently St. Lucie Mets reliever/closer.
God's Speed to everybody, Shep

Well my sons Soph HS season ended last Tuesday night with a loss in the third round of the State Playoffs. I still can not believe that he will be a JR next season it goes by way to fast. He had a tremendous Soph season. AVG .523 44-84. 10 home runs 16 dbls 42 rbi's 18 bb 8 ibb. Only 12 baserunners attempted to steal and he threw out 9 of them. He had 1 passed ball all season and committed only 1 error on a throw. Jeff was named first team All Conference and was named Co-MVP of his conference. One of his goals coming into HS was to have 100 plus hits for his HS career. With 24 last year and 44 this year he is well on his way with 68 hits in his first two years of HS baseball. I am very proud of him. On Weds the day after we lost out of the playoffs and our season ended he was in the cage hitting off a T for about 1 1/2. He is already working to prepare for summer baseball. Sorry for the long post but I am so proud of his attitude and desire to be the best he can be.

Coach called him today to congratulate him.....

WOW! Congrats to your son Ladynmom. As impressive as your son making Dean's list...I think it is JUST as impressive (to ME!) that the coach recognized the achievement and CALLED him to congratulate him. THERE is a coach who knows what is important to long-term success. Congrats to your boy! Smile
To all, congratulations.... Coach May, hopefully I get the chance to see your son play during one of these summers...

The regular season ended for us with playoffs ahead. Both son's (Joe and Mike) made All-League while Joe also made the All-Section Team for the 3rd straight season. He was also named the MVP of his league and recorded his 100th Varsity hit last week. This is a great accomplishment here in NY since the HS season is 20 games long.

Mike made All_league as a freshman shortstop. He hit .343 with only 4 errors all season, 3 of them came in one game. A .954 fielding percentage.

How great it was to have both of them play on the same team for one season....I think I mentioned in an earlier post that they both homered in the same game.. Well the thread is about it being OK to brag...
Congratulations to John Maine and Matt Lindstrom of St Lucie Mets on promotions.

Maine pitched rehab assignment in Port St Lucie last night and is ready to return to show.

Lindstrom was promoted Friday after we saw him pitch Thursday night where he hit 98-100MPH FBs, cruising Smile. Good to see Matt Sczesny and swap ideas on players these past three nights in Port St lucie. Mr Sczesny, my hero, has been in professional baseball for 50 plus years and THE BOSS OF BOSSES

God I love this game, peace, Shep

...as a parent......it is a good thing...and I appreciate it very much!

Brandon Smith, Knott County Central(KY), ends the season with a .446 BA, 22 Runs, 24 RBI's, and only stuck out 6 times all season. He missed about 3-4 weeks with a broken thumb. Brandon made the All-District team for the fourth straight year. Brandon is, also, a candidate for the East All Star team in Kentucky. As a catcher, he had 20 RTO's in 38 SBA.

Evan Potter, Knott County Central(KY), finishes the season with a 5-5 record, 3.18 ERA, 58 K's, and 16 BB's. He also pitched one no-hitter. Not bad for a 7th grader.
End of Year/Awards night was yesterday so I'll take time to brag a little as all those nights last winter out in the garage hitting off the tee paid off. My 07 was named All-Conference at a 2700 student school playing in the 4A division in the Charlotte NC area. He was also team Offensive MVP after hitting .478 with 7 HRs and 38 RBIs and leading the team in 7 offensive statistics playing one of the toughest schedules in the state - as his 20-6 team played 12 games against teams that made the NC 4A State playoffs. He had 4 wins - 0 losses - 4 saves pitching. He was also told he had made the NC State Games Team for Region 6 and was one of the top 10 in the voting. He was a few minutes late arriving at the dinner, so what was his excuse? "I had to throw a bull pen, get through my hitting routine, and go to Peak (Fitness) to get my lifts in."
I'll brag about the entire team ...

Thanks PG ... it was an amazing year and a great accomplishment for the team and coaches. Winning is fun, but to me the even greater accomplishment is that the entire team established a vision of winning CIF a full year ago at the conclusion of last season, and from day one worked tirelessly as a unit towards that goal. They not only established new highs for W/L, team & individual stats, etc., as a team they embodied the character and values of Knights baseball on and off the field. As proud as I am of my son, I just beam every time I see any of the boys because I'm so proud of each of them.

Here's a few fun facts: of the 10 primary starting players, 6 had multiple HRs; 9 had double-digit RBIs; 9 hit over .300; 7 had over 25 hits; the team averaged just over 7 runs/game while the team ERA was 2.5 while being shutout only twice the entire season (Sean's only loss in three years was one of those shutouts ... probably one of his best outings on the hill where he pitched a six-inning, 9K, 1BB, 2 hit game, with two unearned runs on two Errs covering four successive bunts ... and got the loss).

In the Championship game, we trailed 0-3 in the 6th with two on, and Justin Uribe hit a 3 run HR into the seats in right field at Angel stadium to tie the game ... his first HR of his HS career. Justin's a great hitter, but had only been back in the lineup for three weeks and going 5-for-21 after sitting out most of the season due to injury. The game was won on a 2-out, 2-strike, walkoff HR over left field by Brian Oda in the bottom of the 8th (Sean was in the bullpen warming up to relieve in the 9th) ... Brian hadn't played baseball since his freshman season to focus on football and lacrosse, struggled a little early in the season, then really found his bat in the 2nd half in a big way. Brian is the kid holding the CIF plaque on the teams shoulders ... he's still smiling Smile.

Here's a quick 1-minute streaming video of the walkoff jack and the ensuing mayhem ...

    Odas walkoff HR

One small piece on the mystery of baseball: The team we beat was St. Francis of La Canada. In their quarterfinal game, they led 5-0 in the seventh, but their opponent tied the game sending it into extra innings. St. Francis won on a walk-off HR in the 9th. In our game St Francis led 3-0 going into the 6th when we tied it, then they lost the game this time on a walk-off HR in the 8th ... and the team names in the Championship game: it was the Knights vs the Knights.

That's Sean on the very top of the dog-pile ... he had to run in from the bullpen out behind left field, probably the fastest I've seen him run in a while Smile.

    pbonesteele,

High School Championships are fun to watch. I just happen to be in Texas right now, so got to watch Kyle Drabek pitch in the Texas High School semi final tonight. There must have been 6,000-7,000 people at Dell Stadium in Round Rock making a lot of noise. Sure is exciting!

Your son will obviously never forget that championship. Best of luck to him at the next level and what a level it is.
    PBoneSteele

That was some incredible film footage and stats report!! Congratulations for the Great Accomplishment!! What a feeling that must have been for all involved!! Shep

    PGJerry

That must have been an absolute thrill watching Drabek pitch in RoundRock Texas with all of those people there! WOW!! You gotta love this Game!!!
    Peace, Shep
Would like to congratulate Jovani Gallardo-RHP of the Brevard CO Manatees for taking no-hitter into 9th inning on Friday night before giving up hit with one out in the ninth! He was also recognized tonight in front of good crowd and received standing ovation for being awarded "Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Player of the Month" for the month of May. The thing about it is though, his two starts in the month of June are better than his starts in the month of May!!! I have been present at every one of them and recently went public by "Going Gallardo" on PG Jerry's Messageboard!!! Guess I've just been lucky lately, I did win a lottery once Big Grin LOL, Shep
