I'm seeking feedback regarding hitting instructors in the Richmond area. My 12 year old son is making the transition to the big field with marginal success through the fall season. I have reached the limits of my ability to provide quality instruction and would like to understand from the respected veterans of this forum who we should seek out for hitting lessons.

Thank you you all very much in advance for the consideration.

Greg Rithie's camp is excellent.  He is the former hitting instructor for the Pirates and bring alot of knowledge to the table.  His camp takes place in Fredricksburg during the winter months.

Ron Maurer at RBA South does an excellent job with the kids.  Depending on where you live may determne your choices.

If I may offer a suggestion, get your son to swing a wooden bat through his entire off season.  The benefits can not be quantified.

Loiusville slugger, B45, Old Hickory are some great wood bats.

It sounds as though, with your comment on margin success. your son may just need to build his strentgh.  The jump can be overwhelming.  If he loves the games, just make sure he continues to get stronger and enjoys the ride.

I agree with this 100%.  If he is not able to swing -3 wood at this point, consider the B45 bat.  When my son was younger (10-11) I was able to purchase wood bats from them that were as great as -8 I believe.  It will help him transition to wood as he continues to improve his strength.  But definitely have him swing something that is a good 2-3 ounces heavier then he is swinging right now.

There are a ton of very good instructors in our area.  For a 12u kid geography may or may not be a factor for you.

Also, I'd suggest trying a few of them.  Everybody communicates a little bit differently.  Figure out who your kid clicks with and also improves him.

Feel free to email me for a list with contact info if you want.

FYI, Greg Ritchie may be a little tied up as the Head Coach of George Washington University to do many 1 on 1 hitting lessons.  But if you can get in one of his camps do it!
