Boy, this is amazing to read, just amazing, as are each and every one of you who has taken a stand for Gunnar, his family, his life, and their lives together!
Please, please keep on doing what you are doing...and a bit more if you can.

"Good morning! This is the first entry from Gunnar's time at the rehabilitation hospital. Gunnar was transfered from MGH yesterday afternoon via ambulance and the trip went smoothly. My family spent the afternoon getting acclimated to our new place. Gunnar was very responsive yesterday, he just keeps making great progress every day. We are able to communicate with him more, he gives us lots of hugs and holds our hands We gave him a pencil and paper yesterday and he wrote everyone in the family's name down on the sheet. His sense of humor is definitely back in full force. He laughs and smiles a bunch, and enjoys watching SportsCenter on TV. Now Gunnar's biggest goal is to start talking like himself again. Yesterday we asked him what his nurses names were that are helping him and he looked at the white board with all of the info on it and slowly and quietly said the nurses names so that we could hear it. It was very muffled and kind of hard to understand but there were definitely the names. He also kept saying Home...he really wants to go home but we told him that he has to get big and stonga gain before he can go home. He woke up at 4am and started talking to my mom about lots of things and kept laughing because he would forget what he was saying or he made a joke. My mom just told me that Pretty much all Gunnar talked about was food, I mean I would too if I hadnt eaten in 3 weeks. He talked about IN n' Out, Costco Muffins, and Kim Kristoff's tacos on Wacky Wednesday. His voice was definitely not back to normal but he is getting more comfortable with using his voice. My mom wishes that the talking could have waited until maybe 7am instead of 4, but it seems like every time we see him he is improving more and more. His therapy started this morning and he will have about 3 hours of therapy everyday. He will have physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Knowing that he gets to go home after this, I think that he is going to work his butt off to be better as soon as he can. He is such a fighter."

Time for another update! I know that it has been a few days and some of you are getting antsy for some new information. Gunnar is doing great at the rehab hospital...everyday he surprises more and more. He is now eating 3 meals a day and getting fed from his "llama feed bag" at night...or so he says. He has to wear a helmet whenever he is OOB...or out of bed, so during therapy, meals, or wheelchair trips around the facility he has to wear his nice white helmet. During therapy he has been working on daily tasks such as dressing himself and brushing his teeth. He has also worked on standing and walking...and everyday his walking seems to improve. Today we gave him his cell phone to read and he wants to see his facebook soon so that he can see all the love he has gotten from friends and family. He is hoping to do so in the next few days with his speech therapist. He loves watching Animal Planet, especially about white tigers, ESPN of course, and enjoys teasing me whenever he gets a chance. Ever since the doctors took him off the ventilator on April 1st he is been slowly waking up and coming back to us...now that he is awake he is dealing with the effect of suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI). His TBI has resulted in difficulty with attention to his left side, weakness on his left side, memort (short term), speech, and difficutly thinking. These difficulties affect his saftey when moving around, independence in daily tasks, and the learning of new information. At the rehab hospital he is working with a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist every day. Gunnar has approx. 3 hours of therapy a day. This is going to be a long road filled with ups and downs but we are encouraged by his great progress. His rehab team feels that it is imparative that when not working with him that he rests, unfortunately that means that visitors have to be limited and sheduled with our parents. I know you all want to see him, and you will in time but right now we have to do whats best for him and that means having limited visitors. Thank you all again for your love and support. None of us could have done this without you. Enjoy your weekend!

ps. pictures will be posted soon"
A very good report.

The teenage daughter of a friend of mine suffered a head injury two years ago and she is just now becoming "herself" again. The past two years have been filled with mood swings, personality changes, suicidal thoughts, learning problems, etc., and the parents have been challenged to the extreme in trying to help her. My friend said that these types of after-effects are much more prevalent than realized by the general public, and I hope that Gunnar will be spared from some of the worst of them.

Of course, the most important thing is that he is alive and alert. I am praying that he continues to improve with no major bumps in the road ahead.
I received my 3 Gunner t-shirts and wrist bands today in the mail. Thanks to his teammates parents for taking my check at the national classic tournament and passing it along to his family. All those who would like to support parents who could use some help look online to find the shirts and donate. I can only imagine how it can help out financially and emotionally as well. I hope your recovery continues to get you back to health.
Here is the latest and best update from Kalli about Gunnar and his progress...he and his family are scheduled to have him home on May 3.
Everyone one of you is making a difference. You are amazing!

"Hello everybody!
Wow! its been a while since my last real update. I just got back from a weekend down at Cal Poly and realized that i havent updated you all in some time. Its been a little busy recently and there has been so much great news that I havent really had time to sit down and tell you all whats been going on! As you can see with the pictures I have posted that Gunnar is improving more and more everyday. He is now eating real food and a lot of it. The therapists are kicking his butt to get back in shape...and for the first time in a long time Gunnar is gaining weight. He is at about 140lbs now which is great compared to the approx 115 he was at when he left Marin General. Getting him back 155 would be great because thats where he was before the accident. He is now walking on his own with supervision of the therapists and/or my mom. He still has to wear his helmet whenever he is out of his bed and the doctors said that Gunnar will be home before the bone goes back into his skull. Right now the doctors say that Gunnar's estimated release date is May 3rd which is two weeks away! G is so excited to sleep in his own bed and not have to eat hospital food for every meal. When Gunnar gets home he will still have outpatient therapy a few times a week until they feel he can do everything on his own. He will also be working with people to help him with his memory and to catch up from where he left off in school. We are hoping at this point that he will be ready to start his senior year at MC in the fall. I have heard about so many amazing fundraisers for Gunnar and my familh and I are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. We thank you all for being there for us. If you have any questions about Gunnars condition feel free to email me. I would love to answer anything because there is no need for rumors in this situation! I am going to post a few more pictures from this past weekend! Enjoy!

All,
Because of the amount and anticipated amounts of the staggering costs of Gunnar's medical care, a fundraiser is being done on May 1. Here is the link:

http://www.caringbridge.org/vi...nnarsandberg/journal

For those who cannot attend, but want to support Gunnar and his family in an effort to pay all the bills, I emailed Marcy Scott who is one of the great people involved to support the ongoing efforts.
Below is her response(Gunnar's speech is 90%..WOW!) if you can help financially, in any way:

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your email. Wow, I went up to your HSBBW thread. Sure is a lot of support! Smile

I want to let you know that families wanting to contribute to the "Gunnar Sandberg Fund" can make a contribution and send to:
Bank of Marin
501 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Ste #100
Greenbrae, CA. 94904.

Or cash or checks payable to the "Gunnar Sandberg Fund" may be dropped off at any Bank of Marin location near you.

However, if anyone is planning to make a donation anyway, why not get an opportunity to win a $1000 RAFFLE basket! If you send checks to me made payable to the Gunnar Sandberg Fund. State how many tickets, name and phone number so we can contact folks if they win. I can put tickets into raffle baskets on their behalf and the funds still go to the Sandberg's. If your colleagues wish to do this, simply have them send their checks to me and I need to receive them by April 30th to put in raffle for May 1st evening
event:

Marcy Scott
111 Emerson Ave.
Novato, CA 94949

If they need to reach me, I'm at 415-382-1928. Again, just want to point out that this is a direct donation, but the fund we set up is not a non-profit 501c3a entity and so no tax write-off benefits. Just a great contribution for a great cause. I want to also let you know that Gunnar is doing really well with his speech almost at 90% now! He can't wait to go home, what a journey it's been for him, his family and all of us!
(community, teammates, friends around the world including you!)

Thank you and your peeps for caring. Big hearts all over the world in support of Gunnar.

WOW! its been a week since my last entry! I am sorry I havent been on top of my updates as I usually am. Gunnar comes home in 5 days (may 4th)! My family and I are so excited to have him home. He is doing so great. This week he has been filmed for an ESPN special called Outside the Lines that will air probably in early June. Tonight we took him to dinner a few blocks away form the rehab hospital without any therapists... and thats a big deal in the world of rehab. On May 6th Gunnar and the family will be attending the MC vs. Justin Sienna baseball game at ATT park, where Gunnar will be throwing out the first pitch and will be sitting with his team in the dugout. He will also be throwing out the first pitch of the A's vs Giants game on May 23rd, and is very excited! All of this good news makes us all so happy but it is still a long road towards a full recovery. He will be living at home but will have outpaitent therapy probably 3 times a week at the rehab center so that the therapists and doctors can make sure everything is working well. Gunnar should be getting the piece of skull back in his head in the next few weeks so until then he will have to wear a helmet wherever he goes. For those of you who live in Marin and will most likely see Gunnar in the near future I would like to point out that Gunnar is not going to want to be treated differently because of this accident. The best thing we can all do is just make him feel comfortable being home. I know that it is so exciting that he will be back and all everyone is going to want to do is hug him we need to give him time and space to readjust to life. So please if you do end up seeing Gunnar around make sure to say hi but try and treat him like the 16 year old Gunnar we all knew and loved before the accident. I will make sure to keep everyone posted on Gunnars progress.Thank you all so very much from the bottom of not only my but my whole family's hearts with everything that you have all done. The love and support is what has gotten us through this process. We dont know how to thank all of you for what you have done for Gunnar and the family. Have a good weekend all! Until next time.

An article in today's SF Chronicle confirms with the family that Gunnar is going home today, will throw out the first pitch on Thursday at his high school game at AT&T and he will throw out the first pitch before the Giant's game at AT&T on May 23.
I cannot imagine the emotions that will be flowing on Thursday with his teammates, coaches, the fans who attend and especially with Gunnar and his family.
One step at a time, for sure, and every single one of them is so very special.
I think our thoughts and prayers have worked for Gunnar!

If it is OK with our members, I would like to unfeature this thread. Of course our thoughts and prayers will continue and of course, if Gunnar should need us again, we will be there for him and start another thread and/or re-feature this one.

I'll leave this up for a few more days unless someone believes we should do otherwise. Thanks!
