Wow. My mind is boggled. Thank god he was acquitted, but just to have to go through that for telling a player to slide...wow.
I can only imagine the legal fees for both sides, but the coach.....my god. It's really scary when people in positions of authority start 2nd guessing everything they do in their job for fear of litigation. That's when people really get hurt!
Athletes get hurt every day. This was a frivolous lawsuit. the fact that this coach had to go through this tells you all you need to know about coaching today. I have been following this board for many years. I coached for close to 30 years. Never would have imagined it would come to this. Given what goes on why would anybody want to get into it today. Did this young coach deserve this? the answer is no.
Whether or not the coach was looking at the runner coming from 2nd, the kid should have been able to tell the ball was coming just by watching the 3rd baseman. If it was a bang-bang play and the kid really was only 6 feet away from the bag when he slid, I blame him. By that point the 3B would have been ready to receive the ball, I'd have expected runner to be able to notice it and slide on his own
I blame the courts for allowing it to proceed. The case should have been tossed out as soon as it was started.
Systematic breakdown. Nothing else...that the attorneys are scum, the kids parents are no better. But it is Central Jersey and there lots of weird things that go on there. Damn shame.
