As RJM says, Rain, Rain, Go Away.

After three days and nights of rain, the downpour stopped during the night last night. 24's team and coaches worked a good part of the day today so the the team could play its final home game before the playoffs, and the 9 seniors could be honored by the team and coaches. 24 was the starting pitcher, likely his last start in high school. They were all set to go and both teams took infield. The parents began to arrive, waiting to walk the senior players out on the field. It had been dry all day.......

Then the rains came. Game cancelled. They will try to get one last road game in tomorrow before the playoffs begin, but the forecast is doubtful. The team has a bye in the first round after finishing 1st in the division at 13 and 2. First playoff game should be at home on Monday.

Needless to say, we could use a little sunshine right now. Ironically, the rain stopped about 90 minutes after game time.
Good news: It's not supposed to rain tomorrow.
Bad news: The drizzzle just turned to a downpour on already saturated fields. Then it's supposed to rain the following three days. That would leave four days to play four games if playing on Sunday is allowed. After losing three pitchers, it would be a killer to not have the best remaining pitcher available to start two games. He was scheduled to pitch Wednesday and Monday.

Good news: The two players are out of the hospital.
Bad news: The third (girlfriend of one) has surgeries on hold due to complications (don't want to explain further). Complications can be a scary word.

It just goes to show. Rain being bad news is relative in the big picture of life. I'm guessing the girl would be thrilled to take a walk in the rain instead of laying in a hospital bed.

Lost a pitchers dual 1-0 ;lead off walk in 6th--stole 2nd, bad throw on pick-off attempt, wild pitch or past ball dont know which scored only run--both pitchers were reciepeint of very low strike zone. Great game--2 more, winner will most likely win conference. Son was 0-1 with walk--1/2 step faster and he beats out infield hit--he was moving down line though--really wanted another at bat--that's my boy Smile

Hope she's better soon. Last week one of my son's friends wrecked his car and as soon as I heard it I thought of yous son's friends and teammates and how common this is getting...For my son's friend it was typical inexperienced driver coupled with the snow birds that drive around here...'she was going so slow that I assumed she was turning'...He's OK but lost his driving priviledges for 8 months...

Back to baseball....We played a non-league game last Friday. Opponent is a small private trying to put a program back together and really only had a couple of actual players. They are very weak even by small school standards.

We managed not to play down to their level, hitting and pitching well, and won 17-0. Our pitchers combined for a perfect 5-inning game and son hit a shot for an HR...Unfortunately, it wasn't the game we were hoping for with State tournament starting this Friday....
We are done. Lost a horrible game 7-0 to a team that actually showed up to play. But overall it's been really a great season. The team went 19-10. Ballpark stats for 2B: .387 BA, tied for the team lead in doubles, tied for 3rd in HRs (one - woo-hoo!) and 6 (count 'em) strikeouts in 93 at bats. Not bad for the "little" sophomore second baseman.

Summer season practice starts Saturday! First tournament May 23. I love Florida.

2Bmom-Sounds like your son had a great season, good luck in summer ball.

LHPMom-Know how your son feels...24 lost at least two starts to the rain, luckly there is summer ball. Since we live in the same area, let me ask you, do you think the rain will ever stop?

24's team tried to complete its regular season today......got in 3 innings and started the top of the fourth before the rain washed it all out. 24 got the start and pitched ok 1 er, 3k's no walks. had a 9-2 lead when it ended. Did get hit a bit when he left the ball up.

Playoffs start Friday. First game will be Monday, since we are the #1 seed and have a bye--if the rain stops.
Sorry to hear about all the bleeping rain... and not rescheduling? Who are these people?

In the second round of the state tournament, we were down 6-2 in top 6 with two out and two on. They brought the boy in and he threw two pitches and got a ground out. We scored one in the bottom of six to make it 6-3.

Coaches decided we were headed for the losers bracket and took son out and went with a senior, who pitched a perfect 7th. Told son he'd start Thursday's game.

We then got a quick run in the bottom of 7 to make it 6-4, then loaded the bases with no outs. Our clean up hitter, one of the best kids in the world, hit a walk of grand slam, and we won 8-6.

I was sitting in a hotel room in VA (with the rain and feeling some of the rest of you guy's pain) while I was monitoring the game via text message from all the parents, grand parents, in laws and whoever else was at the game. I was dying... Three texts with "GRAND SLAM" all showed up at the same instant. My phone vibrated so much I dropped it.

No Thursday game now, so its back to the pen for the boy.

I'm sure it's the state athletic association. My son's team will be in the same fix next week. With nine straight days of rain, they now play Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Saturday wasn't available for today's rainout opponent. The district seeding meeting is Wednesday night. If any games get rained out now, they don't get played. Forecast for Friday: rain. Even if there was a game scheduled for Saturday, the forecast is: rain. The newspaper high school baseball report has been about the weather for a week. The only quotables from coaches have been about how they've never seen weather like this before.

My son's team could have played today. It rained heavily last night. It hasn't rained all day. The school district union won't let dads do the field work to repair the field. The union doesn't have the manpower to replace an inch of infield mud/dirt in a day.

1:45pm: Never mind. It's pouring again.

We love our school district union. We raised enough money, labor and materials to build dugouts, a two story concession stand/announcers booth and fence in the field (down the sidelines) for the baseball and softball fields. The union said they had to do the work and purchase the materials from an approved vendor list. For the same price as everything listed above we got poorly built dugouts for both fields.

What?

Build me an ark.

Riiiiight! Who is this?

I'm going to make it rain for twelve days and twelve nights and wipe out 20% of a high school baseball season.

Riiiiight!

You must take the players two by two into the ark and wait for summer ball.

Riiiiight!

Thank you, everyone! He is one of those young, average size guys who is catching up in strength and physical maturity with the guys who were always bigger. It has been a lot of fun to watch him have his first big season. I can't wait 'til the summer!

I hope your sons have a great seasons and summers, too!

The rainout deal is tough. We were able to make up all of ours, but I can see it as a problem for some. I know here in Georgia, all regular season games must be completed by May 1. I would imagine if they couln't be made up before then, they would have to be cancelled as well.

Good luck to all of you who made the playoffs.
RJM & all others touched by rain.

I feel for you guys. I dedicated so much time and energy to get my kids to HS level of play, it would kill me if they didn't get to play because of weather and no make-ups!

Funny story, my son was in 12U, had played at least 200 club ball games and had been asked to play up in 13U for the first time, when it (gasp) rains. The fields here don't drain, so after about 1" they washed the tournament out.

He couldn't believe that something like 'rain' could actually interfere with BASEBALL. He was agast that they wouldn't make up the tournament during the week. He just couldn't get that sometimes, it rains...

He had never had a game called for rain until then.

I grew up in New Hampshire. We used markers to color the balls so we could find them in the snow. I know what weather can do...

It was a humbling experience for him. I got a good laugh.
Well, the season is officially over. 27 was used alot this past week. 2 innings on Monday in a Soph victory. 2 innings on Tuesday in a JV win. 2 more innings on Wednesday in another Soph win, 2 on Thursday in a Varsity win, and 3 on Friday in a Soph win over a very tough region rival.

He pitched well, giving up only 2 runs in that span (both unearned) while striking out 19.

Summer league starts June 15th, but, before that, he'll reunite with his Steamboat teammates for a Memorial Day Tourney.

Our Varsity finished 4th out of 6 teams in our Region, missing the playoffs.

Good luck to those teams and players entering their respective playoffs!

Until next year's tryouts...
Huge game last night. Playoff format is such that the winner of last night's game plays Thursday and has to be lose twice to be out. Winner has to play Tuesday and then win twice on Thursday. This determines winner of our pool, who then plays the other pool winner in single championship game next Saturday. Bottom line, winner in driver's seat, loser is making phone calls for pitching.

Both teams have their aces, although an injury has taken one of their best players out for most of the season, so they're actually short. Ours gives up 4 in top 1st, on an error, three walks, three hits (only one of which got past the pitcher's mound). He threw 49 pitches. We come back with 5 in bottom of 1st on a HBP, walk, error and three big hits, mostly driving in the walk, HBP and error. This pretty much sets the tone for the game.

Nothing for them top 2, but we make two errors, which should've been outs, driving the pitch count to 68. We score 5 more in the bottom of 2 on three walks, a double, single and triple. Starter for them is gone.

Things then settle down a bit at 10-4. They get one in the third, again on two errors. Our defense normally our strongest point, failed us miserably last night. Depending on the scorer we made 7-9 errors in the game.

They get two more in the 4th to make it 10-7 (two more errors). Our starter is done. My son is on, the freshman pitching in front of ~1500 people in a must win. The 7pm game people have showed up at this point so there are 4 large school's worth of people in the stadium. He gets out of the 4th with a fly ball with runners on second and third.

We're leaving runners on and not scoring... and starting to feel uneasy about them chipping their way back and not being able to make routine plays.

Son holds them in the 5th, giving up a single and another error but no runs, again leaving runners at first and third. We leave a couple more runners on in the bottom of 5th, still 10-7.

In the sixth, son has 7,8,9 hitters. Walks the first batter on 5 pitches, next kid hits a ground ball between short and third for a single. Then 9 hitter works an 8 pitch walk by fouling off three good pitches to load the bases with no outs. Next kid fouls off two good pitches with two strikes and scorches a line drive to center. CF charges hard, dives and just comes up short. Ball rolls all the way to the fence at 420' for an inside the park grand slam. Now down 11-10. Ground out and single and son is done. Next reliever puts out the fire, so down 11-10, bottom 6. My stomach now has a hole in it and acid is burning up vital organs. Walking the bases loaded to the bottom of the order... AHHHH!!!!

We finally break through in the bottom of 6 with a triple, sacrifice fly (11-11), single, HR (13-11 us), before they get us out.

Top 7, ground out, BB, 1B, 1B (again with the bottom of their order), we kick the single around in the OF and they score (13-12). Coach goes out to talk to pitcher and the HU tells him its his third visit, so he has to make a change, which he doesn't want to do. He brings in our Tuesday starter without any warm-ups. Kid who hit the inside the park job is up with two on and lines a double to score two runs (14-13 them). He walks the next hitter and then starts to warm up and gets us out of it.

I should mention its 100 plus degrees and we're well into our third hour at this point. At least the sun was going down.

Bottom 7, down 1. Leadoff hitter hits high drive deep to left that is caught on the warning track for first out. Next kid, who won Tuesday's game with a walk-off grand slam in bottom of 7 when we were down 2, gets a hanger on 1-2 and hits it out to left to tie the game. Its 340' down the line and this ball landed way past the fence. We then get single, strikeout and then line drive to right for a hit. Batter rounds first heading for second for no good reason and gets caught in a run down, runner at third takes off for home but batter is tagged out before he scores, so its 14-14 heading for extras. AHHHHH!!!!

Our 4th pitcher is lights out. 1, 2, 3 in the top 8. They bring in a kid that is equally as good, 1, 2, 3 bottom 8.

On to the 9th, another 1, 2, 3 inning. At this point, our 4th kid is at 44 pitches. If he goes any more and we lose, Tuesday is going to be a big question mark...

Bottom 9, ground out, E5 (could've been a hit but I had scored so many errors, I went with the flow), BB, bloop single where runners had to hold up, so bases loaded, one out. Infield in, outfield in. Fly ball to CF in his tracks, makes the throw home, runner slides in safe just ahead of the throw. 15-14 win in 9.

Offical time of the game was 4:15. We started a half our late, so 8:45. The 7pm start of the next game was 'delayed'. I don't think they got going until about 9:30. One of the teams had a prom and were hoping for a quick game. I think they missed it.

I have been to exciting games in my life. Had this one ended in 7, it probably would've been one of the best, but this one went past exciting and into a new category I'll call draining. More survival than anything else. If my son hadn't have walked the lead off hitter in the 5th, if we hadn't given them 7 extra outs, if, if, if... Anyway, it's a win in a must win game. We have 4 days to lick our wounds... Boys deserve credit for hanging tough. They could've given up after the top of the 1st, 5th, 6th, but they kept coming back.

Some stats, our pitchers threw a total of 253 pitches, they threw 183. There were a total of 15 walks, 30 hits and 10 errors. Each team used 4 pitchers. The HU greatly contributed to the # of BB's early on as he had a very tight strike zone that seemed to wonder around. As the game went on he got a little more consistant and things settled in.
JMoff...What a wild and crazy game. Good luck next week. We had two playoff games this weekend at the same complex. You're right about the fields being huge...the fields we played on were 360+ down the lines and 422 to center...

Won won both of our games pretty easily (10-1 and 15-1). We pitched well and played solid defense. In 1A it's 'one and done' so we're down to the final four teams. Our next game is Friday and, if all goes well, the championship is Saturday.

I love small school baseball. We're moving up in the rankings and now are among the top 7500 schools in the country...
Hawk19 - I feel for you. We were spoiled in the stadium as there was shade for the spectators. When I saw the smaller schools out in the outter fields with no sun, I thought "Finally some advantage going to the big school."

...and congrats on the ranking. I don't know how they figure those things, but we were actually in the top 10 for a while. We won a few more (with no losses) and dropped to 21 or 22. I think we're back in the teens someplace now.

One and done is tough, but these double ellimination things are hard on the pitching staffs. I hope nobody gets injured from the over use. I imagine with the travel, it'd be hard to do a double ellimination tournament without giving up some serious classroom time. Our kids have finals next week, so this is the wrong time to be missing school.

Best of luck on Friday and if all goes well, maybe we'll see you on Saturday!
Our coach just quit! Eek
I'm not sure of the reason. We finished second in the district two years in a row, each year with a winning record. It is a solid program, though not great. There is a meeting for players this afternoon. There are lots of rumors flying around, but speaking of rumors, I keep hearing that 2B is transferring to a bigger school with a better baseball program (I will announce it to the HSBBW world - he is not!), so who knows what the truth is.

But anyway, the program is in limbo for now. Thank goodness for summer ball.

Why is bigger always considered better?...

I've gotten the 'why is your son playing for that small school?' question several times now. He's happy with the school and the team and, after reading a lot of posts here, I'm happy not to have to put up with the big school drama....

Hopefully your AD will recruit a qualified coach and not just give it to one of the teachers as an activity. Our AD went outside the school to find us a coach and it has made all the difference in the world.
I hope so too, Hawk19! The bigger school is going to end up with many of 2B's summer teammates, they have a coach with a good reputation, and they are going to be a very good team. But 2B likes where he is, baseball or no baseball. Academically and socially, it is the prefect fit, and he can keep playing more competitively in the summer.

Good luck Friday!
I feel your pain 2Bmom. Our coach announced prior to the season that he was leaving. Going to a school closer to his home. The school is new, just starting 1st year next school year.

We have a situation here in our county in which there is a huge hiring freeze. We could not go out and hire a new coach to come in. For better or worse, we got a guy who was one of the assistant coaches last year and didn't coach this year due to family situations. He is also the quarterback coach for the football team.

No way to know how he is going to be. We also have an assistant as well as our pitching coach who are unsure if they will be back next year.

Regardless, bbson likes the school and there is no way he would leave it to go somewhere else regardless of the situation. He is a "Knight" thru and thru. We'll just have to wait and see how things work out next year.

Good luck to you guys.
Sorry to hear about the coaching changes.

Frankly, you have to appreciate the time and dedication of these guys. If you count up the hours they put in and divide them into the dollars they make, I'm sure its much less than minimum wage. Most of them are full time teachers, which isn't exactly a high paying job either.

Then the economy has problems, tax revenue decreases and we start laying them off or can't replace the ones that leave. Sad...
quote:
Depends where you live. Teachers in our area are well paid and make some nice loot as a coach on top of their salary. They're not coaching for chump change, that's for sure.

I guess it also what you consider 'well paid'. In my mind, for what they do, for what they're responsible for, for the training and education they have.....they don't make enough....
Pop ups HS season officially ended last night. He only got one pop up, but other than that he did all he could do to help win the game. Caught the whole game with no pass balls, hit a 2 run bomb out of the park, BB and a single. My only regret was not getting there in time to film it. I did see it as I was walking to the field, heard loud thud, watched the ball go way up and out, did not know who it was at the time but guessed it was Pop up. We had this team on the ropes, they had just lost a game in 10 innings and we were hitting their pitcher hard. But due to two critical errors in the top of 7th, they rallied to score enough to take the lead, and the game. All in all, son had a good last season. My only frustration in last nights game was the IDIOT who caused the accident on I-5 making us late. I mean how does one cause an accident on a straight section of freeway in broad daylight on a dry sunny day!

I checked out his next years college program and cannot wait to see how he does with quality coaching staff who actually appreciates having him.
