Both myself and my 2013 have been apprehensive since the entire staff (except head coach)took other jobs or resigned from the coaching staff. New staff has 0 years of HS coaching experience. So, yesterday was the big day. Opening of spring practice. Nothing changed. No ground balls, no live hitting, no instruction, no nothin! Are there others out there who feel this way? Kids are chomping at the bit and the adults who are there to lead are to lazy or always have an excuse. Sorry folks but I needed to vent. First official day of practice used to get me fired up and ready for baseball. With this new staff and same old head coach I guess my wood is wet.

Sorry for your situation. I'd be visiting or dropping a line to the AD while looking for a different baseball opportunity. LOL
Just signed a contract on our house. If the good Lord is willing, we will have the opportunity to look elsewhere this summer. To give you an example of the coaches laziness......he has cancelled games because of a chance of rain in the forecast. Made us look like fools last year when he yells rain out and the sun ends up shining all afternoon. He cancels practice if the fog rolls in! Talks about how they probably will not practice on such and such day because they are calling for a 20% chance of snow. No sour grapes here as my son has started his freshman and sophomore years and was all-region last year. I just worry about 3-4 months with little or no instruction. What kind of feedback will this coach give when colleges call and ask questions? I have left his contact information off several college questionnaires because of this. Thanks for allowing me to vent. Hopefully i can share good news tonight or first thing in the morning.
Coach tells them how cool and tough he used to be "back in the day". Then tells them how they need to be cool and tough like him. Then he will go through and let everyone know what they are doing wrong in their life and how to fix it. After that he will tell each one how good they can be if they will just listen to him. Takes up a good part of an hour then you have bullpens and some running.....time to go home! No practice over two hours and still have not swung a bat 3 days into pre-season.

Our try-outs were last July.....then when school start they start working out and lifting as a team, and long tossing until Jan. then the first of Jan. they start slowly working off the mound with specific drills for each position. And batting practice......continue the running and hit the dirt in Feb....play March April, and May...

Tryouts in July? How does that work, exactly? By the first day of school, is the starting rotation and starting lineup already set? Wouldnt incoming Freshmen still be playing 14U ball and that get in the way? What about if the other classes are still doing travel tournaments that could affect their ability to tryout? What if I move into your school district next week? Is my son out of luck or can he still tryout? And if he can still tryout, what happens if he ends up being your best pitcher and player, do they cut a kid?

Dont think I am slamming you, or that you have to answer every question. I'm trying to put this with my son's school team and dont know how tryouts 8 months before the games start can be benefitial.

Well that's the schedule we always use,try-outs are in late July school starts in August. ( modified schedule) of course if a player is playing football or basketball they are not involved until those sports conclude. The starting rotation is not set until March. Most all of the work prior to March is done in the weight room and outside, and the barn doing drills, getting stronger..... players can still play fall baseball on travel teams as long as there are not more than 4 players from any one high school on a travel team. State rule.

If your son moves in he can try-out for the team in early Feb ( they have another try-out , but I have not seen many make it.) I guess if you move in during the season you can have a personal try-out. I have never seen a kid that made the team in July get cut do to another player coming in late. I feel the benifit to this is you are molding the players early and getting stronger faster etc...

It works we have won the sectional playoffs 8 out of the last 10 years, been to state 4 out of the past 5 years. In that period of time (10 years) over 75 players have signed a college deal, and 15 of them were top Div 1 schools. We have serveral that are playing in the minors.

I have noticed on this board that a lot of schools do not get started as early as we do.
It’s the first day of HS Baseball here in Maryland. We had our first phase of tryouts this morning (Thursday March 1st) because of late parent teacher conferences. My freshman son arrived at 9:45 on the turf football field to run 60's and a simulated 1st to 3rd. It was sunny and 55 degrees. What a beautiful day. 45 players for 28 spots. Ouch! The waiting over the next few days will be painful.
Sounds like all of the states are starting to ramp up there high school seasons! Down in Florida we are a couple of week into the season! So far i have seen some very competitive games, with some good prospects. Came across this article on a website thought i would share, talks about taking advantage of your high school season! http://recruitingcycle.com/max...-high-school-season/ Good luck to everyone
Being the father of three boys can just be so freaking awesome. Having girls wasn't in the cards for me. My two oldest boys have played travel baseball since they were fairly young. They've both won state championships and even a national WWBA championship along the way. My youngest son (hs freshmen) never had the interest or desire to play travel baseball or very competitive baseball at a young age as his older brothers, until now.

This summer his attitude changed on a dime, when he finally played on a decent rec team that made an incredible run and won his Rec League championship. He had the time of his life on this team, and played a big role in their success. That taste of success changed everything on a dime. At that moment, my son decided he wanted to play high school baseball. He worked out hard this fall and winter, went to open gyms sponsored by his school. He did a Fall winter camp (10 weeks long) to work on his mechanics and learn to throw a new pitch. He did everything possible to get ready for high school tryouts. His high school is one of the best baseball programs in the state. I thought he had a shot, and my wife thought he didn't have a prayer. He made the first cut after 3 days, and had a very good tryout to that point. They continued tryouts until the next Monday because of weather. He had to wait all weekend, and then pitch on Monday. He didn't do well on Monday and thought he blew his slim chance. He was really bummed out when I got home from work. I told him to relax, and that sometimes it isn't what you do, it is what you don't do and how you handle yourself. So, we drive up to the school at 8pm to see the final roster posted on the baseball ticket booth. He approaches the list looking for his number, and then this huge "Grinch who stole Christmas grin" just comes across his face. He runs to the car to tell me he made the team. I admit it...my eyes got a little moist. I can't tell you how happy I am for my kid. Finally, it is his turn to shine. He knows he has a lot of work to do, but he is going to get a shot at high school baseball success. I have one playing in college and another playing HS Varsity, but NOTHING compares to my freshmen JV player. I'm so proud of him. He is doing it his way.

Fenway-

Congrats to your youngest, that is a great story. As a father of three boys I also see it as great testimony to letting your youngest find his own way and not feel pressure to automatically follow in older brothers footsteps.

By letting him find his own way, he discovered the joy of baseball by himself, on his own terms. For me that is a wonderful lesson for all.

In our family our youngest is a hs soph and is busy preparing for his high school production of Le Miserables this weekend. That is his joy and I'm very happy he found his way to his interests without feeling the need to follow his older brother's athletic interests.

Enjoy the Spring!
Many thanks BaseballmomandCEP, Tooster, twotex and Bb4me. I can't wait for their games to start this week.

We get to see the high schoolers during the week and the college pitcher on (some) weekends. It is a great problem to have.

Have to share . . .

2013 really stepped up his off-season workouts, lessons, and training. Speed, strength, pitching, and hitting were all expected to show marked improvement.

Learned last week he's the #1 pitcher. First game out of the chute over the weekend was a 0.00 ERA complete game and the game-winning RBI.

When he got home his exact words? "Next year I'm doing all that off-season work again, and more if I can. It obviously really pays off!"

Don't you just love it when they can actually see it for themselves?
Conrats 2013 Parent. Glad the first game went great and hope the rest of them do as well.

KCDawgjr was supposed to play his first high school (Freshman team) game today - a doubleheader. He's all set to make his debut at SS and in the two hole. However, Mother Nature has other ideas.

It has been perfect weather for the last two weeks. In fact, his team hasn't missed a single practice to the weather since they started tryouts a few weeks ago. But it looks like that all ends today. 90% chance of rain starting around 2 PM means no games today and probably not the rest of the week. They haven't cancelled them yet, so he's already dressed and pacing the house (off this week for Spring Break) incessantly checking the school web page to see if they've been called yet.

Oh well, I'll hope for the best but prepare to wait at least another week to see his debut.
Son is a senior this year. Although he has played varsity as a pitcher since he was a soph - he has never had a "normal season" as a position player. No worries as a soph as he was a Varsity player in the starting rotation. As a junior the seniors played in front of him as he DH'd some when not pitching. Holding our breath as senior season unfolds - but it appears that he will be playing defense - 2 games so far. In practice - 2 scrimmages - and 2 games he has seen P, DH, LF, 3B and ss. So likely no regular position (or "normal season" as a position player) - but it is great to see him in the field and getting regular at bats! Patience is a virtue I guess. So glad spring season has started. Play Ball!!!

Oh, when Mother Nature has other plans!!! I can picture him pacing now . . .

2013 came home furious that they can't practice outside today because of heavy rains this morning. I told him the one certainty in life is that you cannot control the weather.

Hope your son gets on a field soon!

2013 played in his 1st Varsity game & 1st game of his team's season, today. They started off with the 1st run, opponents tied it up. They held them. Brought in to pitch in the B/6th. 1. He caught the line drive at him. 2 & 3 / K's. B/7th - 1,2 & 3 / K's. Top of 8th / extra Inning: he bunted, made it to 1st, stole 2nd, next batter got a S, & brought 2013 home. Proved to be the games winning run, after the B/ 8th, 2013 - 1. K, 2. Full Count / Walk, 3 & 4 - K's! Game over & his 1st Varsity W! Very windy & 1st game of season, they did pretty well. It was fun to watch! Gonna have his 1st area city newspaper write-up, with him in it, in the morning! Smile
