I have been playing summer ball with my high school team but i feel like i am not getting any exposure. Should I try and get on a showcase team or continue to play with my high school team? I am a sophomore in high school and i am real serious about baseball and getting a college scholarship. I played varsity last year as a freshman.

And I highly recommend that you follow PG's advice!

Yep, me too.

But please also make sure you enjoy your HS baseball playing days. No matter what the talent level of the team, you can create some great memories with the friends you grew up with in your hometown.

Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving! Wink
Showcase teams will generally get you more exposure than a high school team. BUT you must get on a showcase team that is high profile. I can NOT stress this enough.

Most showcase tournaments are played at college stadiums. BUT, just because a showcase team plays at large tournaments at top D1 schools, does NOT mean that team gets seen. Many of these tournaments utilize fields off campus and recruiters don't want to miss the high profile teams and since they can't be in two places at one time, they skip the games not played in the stadium. I know this from experience. Our team played at tournaments with some very high profile teams but we never played against them and for more than half the games, we never saw one coach at our games. We'd go over to the stadium to watch games between our games and there all the recruiters would be.

So how do you find out what those high profile teams are? Look for 2010 players in your state that have already signed with D1's and see what showcase teams they were on. It will become very obvious to you which teams get seen.

Let's break this down a bit.

A. What do you think the term 'exposure' means to you?

B. Did you start as a Freshman last year, on your HS Team?

C. Will you start as a Sophomore next year, on your HS Team?

D. The best exposure you can obtain, is to seek to play in front of the recruiting college coaches for those colleges you wish to attend.

E. As a Sophomore, I think you should continue playing with your HS team.

If you are a Junior in HS and have more than one pro skills, you will be found.
Think of yourself as a product that you are trying to sell. You have to have a product that people want to buy. You have to market it to the right people that would want to buy your product. Then you have to be able to sell it to them in order to be successful.

Now ask yourself these questions.

Are you a product that is ready to be sold?
In other words when you step on the HS field with your HS summer team are you the best players on the field? Are you one of the best players on the field? Do you stand out? Do you have a tool or tools that stands out over the other players on the field? Do you play at a high level or do you blend in?

Would you be better served spending your playing time working on getting better at the game? Would you be better off working on your game or showing your game off right now? In other words is your product a work in progress that needs some more research and development or is it ready to be marketed and sold?
I agree with SandlotMom - Any team can take your money and say they are a "showcase" team. But will the scouts come to see you? NO. My son played for a team that nobody was interested in seeing. The only time the scouts would come is when we played the "big name" teams. The teams with a reputation for recruiting D1 prospects. So, do your homework, and find the best teams for your area. Good Luck.
