Sarah Palin, the Vice President nominee, in her acceptance speech last night said: "The only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is LIPSTICK." Being from the south we don't play hockey but we do have lots of baseball moms and a few pit bulls. Two questions:

1. Are hockey moms and baseball moms different? AND

2. Is being compared to a pit bull a good thing or a bad thing for the mother of a young athlete?

Personally, I've been "mom" to 2 Yellow Labs, preferred "dog of choice". Smile
When I owned a rep business, one of the few women in a man's world 25-30 years ago, some of my competitors & associates referred to me as Mzzz. Barracuda....so, I knew I was in their game!

Things changed when I became a mom, but, i agree with BigHit15...Mzzz Baracuda was ready for a comeback, if anyone ever messed with my kids...

Lipstick! I got a chuckle out of that!! Smile

1. no I'm not a pit bull. Son fights his own battles and has been very successful so far.

2. I guess it depends on how the dog was raised.

She does remind me of a pit bull groomed for the ring.

One of the sweetest dogs I've ever known was Bowser the pit bull. He was raised in a loving home and was not trained to be brutal.
I was a hockey mom for about 8 years, doing the travel hockey deal, in ice arenas about 6 days per week. I don't recall needing to be protective of my son about hockey during those years, and most of the other moms were actually pretty relaxed also, but I do remember a few hockey moms who fit Sarah Palen's description! But they were in the minority.

I only got to hear part of Palen's speech last night, but I liked what I heard. What an historic presidential election this will be...unless something very unusual happens, either a woman or a black man will be on the winning ticket!

1. I doubt that there's any difference between a hockey mom and a baseball mom.... other than one gets to have a lot more fun! Big Grin

2. Didn't care for the analogy. Pit bull isn't my style and not the type of parent I want to spend much time with. I thought her speech contained way too many sarcasms and punches.... although I agree with the thought that she's a "hot" mom! Smile A cute pit bull - no doubt!
I didn't hear any of the media last night or this morning tuning into the pit bull statement. Her point wasn't about being a tough hockey mom. Her point was about being a tough woman. Then she took a bite out of the Democrats.

Did you know her telepromter broke early in the speech? I was wondering why she was never looking down. I heard about it on the radio this morning. She proceeded and succeeded with a recently written speech ad lib because she was speaking from their convictions.

When a teleopromter broke on Obama he had to stop the speech and wait for it to be repaired. I guess that's what happens when you try to please people with the flavor of the day rather than what you believe.

I was watching a show on Animal Planet last night called Animal Witness, having to do with the role animals can play in solving crimes. One of the stories was about a man who had been shot and died, and his pit bull who was also shot and eventually died. During the segment on this story, a 'factoid' was explained that pit bulls are also called The Nanny Dog because of their protection over their 'children' ... probably not a bad concept but not one readily acceptable for the pit bull which has been severely tarnished by the terrible things that people have done to this breed.
Sorry, any dog haters here? To be honest with you I am a dog hater. I hate to see dogs running loose in our local park. I hate to see someone run their dog inside our local baseball field especially when I take my son to a practice in that field. Anytime this happens, I will call Animal Control and Park Ranger right away even with the dog owner in there. I don't care if the Pit Bull Mom or Dad give me a stare, because they have no bussiness being in the baseball field. I have my baseball bat ready preparing for any possible attack by a crazy dog and protecting my kids.

On the other hand, I love hokey moms because I am a Blues fan. To me, Hockey Moms & Pit Bulls should never be mentioned together. JMHO
Doesn't matter if you are a hockey mom or baseball mom - I'm an FFA mom and a volleyball mom too - any kind of mom who is involved with her kids and will give her life for them is a fighter - someone with convictions, someone that will protect and defend til the death. I think most all moms (and I am sure those that are on here) would do that for their kids - whether their style is to sit back and let the kids deal with things or not. When push comes to shove, don't mess with me or my kids. It has to go pretty far to get to that point, but once the line is crossed, the gloves come off!
Have only had to do that once - and it involved a s****r coach who was publicly humiliating my husband at the s****r annual dinner. Afterward, I humiliated him (quietly, with no public show of anything) right back.
I think that is the message that Sarah Palin was trying to give - you've got to stand up for what you believe in and not feel you have to be sorry or timid about your well-thought out convictions.
Although I was warned not to get political on the forum - since someone else started it - I am giving my two cents! Smile GO Sarah!!!!

1. Hockey moms have 6am practices they have to get ready for. I've seen moms take their 8yr olds to 6am practice and bring along her 6 and 4 olds in tow crazy

2.Hockey moms have to have to have tough skin watching their little ones getting crunched!

Big Grin Moral: Telepromters are not good. That's why Bush used hiden microphones at debates

I am also a hockey mom and a baseball mom - not much difference in the two! Except for those early am practices that we have had with hockey! Lots of driving with both sports. No rainouts with hockey! Hockey equipment and uniforms smell a lot worse than the baseball stuff!

Just lots of moms who care about their sons and daughters!

One thing we can all agreee on is that this election is definitely not boring - I've enjoyed both weeks of speeches! McCain has his work cut out for him to try to top Sarah's awesome speech!

Another thing we can all agree on is how wonderful sports can be to bind a family together! Good times and great memories!
I don't think she meant anything by the joke other than to poke fun at herself. Which is a rare quality among politicians, I can assure you from experience! Instead of taking offense, we should appreciate that we might just actually have someone in national politics who isn't totally awestruck with themselves, at least not yet.

I enthusiastically agree! I love her, so far! I'm not a political junkie, but I would love to meet her! I also enjoy listening to the feminists totally diss her. Wow.

I can't wait for the debate on October 2. It should be a good one.

Yes, "Best of luck to Sarah and all moms".

Without knowing your politics I believe your view is a perfect example of how this woman is going to bring a lot of mothers who aren't flaming liberal feminists to the Republican party in November. Sarah Palin is a feminist. A woman can be a feminist and be a mother, woman and a Republican, too. The left just doesn't want this to be true. She will be attacked relentlessly by the media from now until November, and beyond if McCain wins.

Laughs.

Who pee'd in your cornflakes? geminy cricket

(watches My German Shepard go water kbat's front tire) It looked dry and brittle!
I don't think that the sport had anything to do with it at all (insert s****r, baseball, softball, etc.).

She has taken a lot of cheap shots over the past week, including those on her daughter. I think she was directing the statement to the press, she's obviously very protective of her family. In other words, stay away from my pups.

It's pretty obvious that the woman can handle her family and her job at the same time and she didn't get to be governor because she is a sweetie pie.
Though many of my philososphies are a bit different than hers, I saw her speak on TV about a month or so ago, and I really liked what she had to say and how she said it.
JMO.

Camera angles late in her speech show the teleprompter working, for those that watched the speech. It did, however, sometimes scroll too quickly for Palin to stay on track when she paused during applause and she had to deal with that.

The example floating around the 'net today about Obama and the 'broken teleprompter' was of him walking back and forth across a stage while being loudly heckled by someone in one of the first rows; that was probably distracting.

Not quite sure how the story got started, or why. There are plenty of issues that are important to discuss without manufacturing these little snippets.

Good point. This was not designed to have a political agenda. I think the questions initially asked have been answered and it's getting to the point that innuendoes, political jabs, and modified pictures are being used to make a point.
