After all that rambling I couldn't tell if you think it's a sport or not. It's not a sport, I was just curious what you were tryng to say.

No question about it.

Okay, here is a mom of only a male child, who was never a cheerleader because she was too busy with choir, yearbook, studying, and my boyfriend, and who doesn't necessarily question the 'sportability' of cheer, but who wonders... when witnessing the gymnastic and acrobatic movements of said cheer leaders during those national 'tournaments' ... when the activity/sport/whatever became an end unto itself rather than being a supportive, auxilliary function of the team they are cheering for. In other words, what the heck does the tumbling and throwing and pyramid stuff have to do with cheering the team on to victory? I think at times it is more a distraction than anything at the games. The cheerleaders (in high school primarily) seem to do more acrobatics than the cheerleaders in college, and definitely more than the 'professional' cheerleaders with the NFL and NBA.

I am not going to say whether or not I believe cheerleading is a sport or not ... I do NOT want to rile the feathers of my dear friends shortstopmom and play baseball. But I think the extent to which the young ladies go (primarily women, tho I know men participate also) for the contests/tournaments with the pyramids and throwing etc are a bit too much when there is so much risk involved that is not necessary to the intended role of the cheerleader. I realize that more extreme activity seems necessary to win contests, but I would hazard a guess that the average sports fan at a high school game would not even notice if the cheerleaders kept their feet pretty much on the ground except for an occasional back flip.

So, if someone can explain why the cheerleaders think it is necessary to turn a relatively mild supportive activity into what many of us old fuddy duddies would consider an 'extreme' sport, I would appreciate the input.

This year cheerleading was made an official sport in Illinois by the Illinois High School Association.

I don't disagree with discontinuing the pyramids and other dangerous "stunts".

Are drill team and dance considered "sport" also?

My son's high school's dance team has won state the last few years. 26 or so young female athletes train every day, peform every Friday night at halftime at football and basketball games, then go to the state competition where they compete against other dance teams, judged for scores, to determine who is best.

That sounds like a sport to me.

Cheerleading is not too much different, if done on a competitive basis, scored by judges for its athletic elements.

But heck, I think golf is a sport. (kind of)

this is indeed an oldie, but none the less the first one I pulled up and will answer many questions.

Now, granted I never really expected to convince a baseball site that cheerleading is a sport. I think I could chase my tail in circles more successfully, but since JT said it,...I just thought I'd call him on it and perhaps get a chance at a little pineapple upside down cake too!

Its become necessary because of the evolution of sports, I suppose. When a simple five man ground pyramid " ooooed and awwwwwed " the audience at half time in 1950, it was great.
With time, the audience (& the cheerleaders and those watching/judging ) have come to expect more. The intensity has grown with the intensity of sports in general. Having cheerleaders not tumble or stunt is like having a baseball player not slide into home for fear that he might hurt himself.
With the adaptation of men ( and by men I mean very strong athletic gymnist men ) grew the ability to go higher in the air. Crowds go wild for bigger and better. Bigger tackles, bigger hits, bigger basket dunks, bigger pyramids and stunts. Its all part of todays modernization and growth.

Some cheerleaders are better than others. Some annoy, some entertain. Just as with sports. Some teams are good, others stink. Its all about perspective and ability, as with ANY sport.
Worldwide competition has brought the need for extreme.
The part I will agree with, from some of you opposers, is that the unfortunate need to out preform sometimes out weighs the need for correct and proper choreography, capable training and educated spotters. Just as with the overuse of pitchers and the inability to train pitchers in proper technique, so goes the sloppy slap-it-up-there-n-smile attitude for some cheer organizations.

I promise to spare you all & wont really try and convince those who dont believe. We'll save that for another place and another forum!

Funny that "cheerleaders" do not show up at baseball games, isn't it!!!!!! Nor does the "dance team"

Funny TR,....how obvious your knowledge is limited to your area and you havent been to a baseball game in Kansas, or Texas, or California where the cheerleaders are there.

I think perhaps baseball is more your area of expertice TR.

You can leave the cheerleading area to me.
I'll gladly take it, and I'll gladly remain respectful,

But just for the record, the definition of sport is as follows: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.

Scholarships were the reason that the Illinois High School Association sanctioned cheerleading as a sport.

And we all know that girls sports are where the money is.....unless one talks about football...

I'd guarantee it's MUCH easier for a cheerleader to play lacrosse than it is for a girl lax player to be a cheerleader. I'd love to see a laxer attempt a round-off, back handspring tuck.

Yes, my wife was a cheerleader as was my oldest daughter. As for my daughter, she also played basketball, softball, ran track and played golf in HS and now in college on scholarship. So I'd say she's a little bit athletic. Guess which sport was the most grueling in terms of training?

I never said a cheerleader was not athletic--I said it is not sport---and I stand by that---

you also added golf to the mix--in my book golf is a skill not a sport such as pool or bowling
