We carry no more than 18. A soph must be able to help the team in some capacity (a primary back-up, courtesy runner, etc) to make the team. A freshman will have to start, or will be on JV. Seniors who have been with the program are automatic, but if they will not "contribute," the coach will have what the players call "the talk" with them: "You will be on the team but you probably will not play much. It's up to you if you want that, or not." I have to admire a coach who is up front with the players.
my school is 4a, so its prety large and we have 3 teams: frosh, JV, and varsity

frosh, we usually have about 13-15, all freshmen. JV, last season we had 13, mostly sophmores (2 frosh), then varsity we had 17, from all ranges... but that number did include some kids who never really played much... a freshmen catcher who was decent, but they just used to catch bullpen, a couple situational pitchers (lower classmen...) they had no posistional players that were freshmen and actually played on the varsity squad... im sure its different with smaller schools though.

My son attended an all boys parochial HS...
Freshman year 76 came out for tryouts...7 catchers, 19 2nd basemen, 17 outfielders...first week 26 were cut...during remaining 3 weeks roster was cut down to 25...of those 25 6 went on to play varsity...out of the original 76 my son is the only one playing at the collegiate level amzing as that may be...but,by the same token, he went to varsity as a sophomore and of the 7 seniors who were on that team 6 have been drafted applaude
Varsity & JV teams. 18 seems to be the number for each team, give or take 1. Varsity is made up mostly of Jr. & Sr.s We have 1 Sr. player that will be 4th year Var.starter, & 3 Sr.s that will be 3rd year var. starters.
It's important to keep grades up, because someone is always in the wings ready to step in!

I hear ya!! I know 3 varsity players that had to quit because of grades last year! How you can't maintain a 2.0 GPA amazes me!!

Dude don't be hating. LOL. I didn't make grades for baseball and it is all my fault but things happen. I am a bright kid who just got into too challenging classes. It is my fault though because I focused on the wrong things (friends, chicks) and not my homework. Life is full of lessons and I am just going to learn from it.

Glad you learned from it! Hope you do well in the rest of your high school career. Good luck!

1000 Students in the school.

20 players (est) on the varsity & 15 (est)on the JV. We have no 9th grade team so almost all of the freshmen play JV. The coach keeps between 8 & 10 freshmen most of the time. Some players will play on the JV but be allowed to dress for the varsity games.

We had the following position players start:
2 seniors
1 freshmen
1 sophmore
4 juniors

Our school has 1,200 students.

We have 22 Rostered on the Varsity but some of these are also rostered on the JV. We keep about 14 on the JV then leave additional space for the best freshmen. The best freshmen get a chance to "double dip." We have a freshman team. We keep 20 on it. We always seem to have 2 sophomore win varsity starting positions and we always seem to have a least one freshman make the varsity roster.
