A D1 program is trying to sell my son on being an invited walk-on. Maybe these new NCAA rules have something to do with it -- I can't say for sure. My son has been in frequent email contact with the program for the past year-and-a-half, so they know he's very interested in them, but based on others' experience and recommendations, as well as the NCAA rule now prohibiting transfers, we don't feel it would be in his best interest to walk on.

Other D1's have talked to son's coach about him, but no phone calls yet, so we don't have much "leverage."

Any tips on how to negotiate a scholarship? Or at least put the program off while we wait for possible offers from other programs?

my 2 cents, actually you nave NO leverage ... but have plenty of time (assuming son to be a 2008 - if a 2007 say yes, school starts in 2 wks)

but, as there os NO commitment from the college, it requires non from your son. presumably your response could be

"thank you for the invite, I/we will consider it along with any other (future) offers"

if the coach has the balls to put a deadline on a walk-on invite (non-offer) - you don't really want to play for him

Bee gives the same advice that I would give. What are you gonna put off with no offer? The coach is smart, he most likely knows your son is more interested in them then the other way around.

Actually I would go right back to the coach and ask him if he is kidding. With no commitment, sit out one year transfer rule in effect, what would he expect your son to do? Be firm, tell him you are aware of the new changes.

Now is the time to get busy, fall camps, showcases OR remember, if your son is a 2008, you have until next August to consider all options.

I know of a 5th round 07 draft pick that was offered "books" to come to a large ACC powerhouse program, because they knew that he wanted to go there...parents were alums, childhood dream etc. While I'm sure he would have played there for books, he took a much better-IMHO-offer(ACC)from out of state. Don't let anyone take advantage of you or your situation. Be patient!!!!
