How to pick captains?

What is the best way to select team captains? Should they be selected from the returning senior varsity players? Should the team vote on it? Should the coaches make the selection? Should they be seniors only, or does it not matter?

The first season the coach allowed the players to vote. It was a popularity contest. Ever since he's chosen captains for each game. Players have to earn it with their play. Being baseball captain is nothing more than a badge. On the field up the middle players are in charge. In the dugout there are natural leaders.
