Danny - I think you should remain engaged here for awhile longer. This thread is getting way TOO deep for you Big Grin

ClevelandDad,
In your post, your use of "awhile" is wrong.
Since "awhile" means "for a while", it is never used with a preceding preposition. When preceded by a preposition, the correct form is "a while", as two words. That is, you never say "Stay for awhile". You say "Stay awhile" or "Stay for a while".

What's good for the goose is good for the gander! Big Grin

It actually crossed my mind that I might have improperly used that word - now we know Big Grin
.

MN Mom...

Suggestion; Is it possible to incorporate a spell check function into the icon list above the post a reply box? It would be BIG help.

Although an English major...I spell and write fo-net-ik-ly, and am not much, and have never been swayed/impressed enough by the micro management agenda of the Syntax Nazis/Nazi's/Nazis'/Naziees to go to attach myself to a dictionary and handbook of current English usage. LIfe is too short for that. As a result I am one of the worst offenders on the HSBBW.

I get by (sort of) with a cumbersome spell check function. I have ALWAYS thought that having one here would really be a big plus...this seems like a good time to ask for one.

Please?

Cool 44

Yes?

This site may be hopelessly grammatically challenged. Roll Eyes

By the way TPM, you have a little singular/plural conflict going on in your question. Where is, which you have contracted to Where's should refer to him or her. Where are should refer to them.

- Where's the grammar police when you need him?
- Where's the grammar police when you need her?
- Where are the grammar police when you need them?

Of course, The third entry makes the most sense since police is generally a plural noun.

You also misspelled grammar. Razz

That said, is it now time for me to go away again for a few months?

Clearly, we are in the darkest days before the start of the new season. That said, to add to this trane of thawt:

You may have seen this ... Aoccdrnig to rseerach at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?

Also, my little southpaw had a Geometry teacher who used to tell the kids he always wonders when he sees the road sign "Slow Children At Play" just where the comma was meant to be. Is it "Slow, Children At Play" or is it "Slow Chilren, At Play"? He would commonly ask students on their denser days "where is your comma."

Clearly, mine is right before the word "At"; but I never could run very fast.

The Bulwer-Lytton Award is given annually to the worst opening sentence in the year's crop of literature (although most are written with the intent of trying to win the award).

My all-time favorite, from many years ago, is:

"That's the biggest boil I've ever lanced," said the doctor as he wiped off his glasses.

2008 Winners and 'honorable mentions' can be found here: http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/scott.rice/blfc2008.htm
I have a problem with anything Arabic. Who is this Al-Gayda guy, anwyay? Why does he live in caves with other men? Is his Imom wondering why he didn't come home? Where does all the cave Shiite go? I'm confused. Have been ever since I was a young boy and banged my head. Iran into Irock.

One of your daughters just commented on how um. um. embarrassing you are.

The younger one doesn't get it. She says, "It doesn't make sense."

Come on, the kids have to get with the program. Dad's a funny guy! (Looking Big Grin)

iespell check

I checked the site out jerseydad. It's great! Absolutely awesome!

My favorite feature? Hands down...without question...spit on a dime and dance to the moon...don't even show me another! It is...

Organize your personal words in individual custom dictionaries! Share them with your friends and co-workers over the network!

Wow! I've been waiting nearly a criketime for a feature like this! Imagine having our own, our very own, dictionary gammed full of our turbicious and goondalay words! What trun! Seldom will be heard a conflipulatory word and the guise will be blackadderly all day!

Having a vocabulary saylored to fit our treeds! Now we can, through sharing our created words, tredbiddingly and kerpunctorily answer each and every skwint-tant, stumbulator, and pertraggonist whenever they get on their deny-hoarse and plither like skanduloots under our skin! We'll be able to downright floot 'em in their flace! Spadiffilous! Crumpootingly spadiffilous! Ga, ga, ga!

No longer will we be froondaked, pi$$ilated, stoomed, or trowsweetened beyond all restair by the speen-turreted and loud trullies and crambacks...this is our tartar sauce moment!

We've had kerpuff! This will put an end to being pistolkelped by those who smate, blooster, and strank here on the HSBBW. They used to get our smud to poil, but no more!

Now we can troll up our sneeves and smat back! We'll emboozle our refractoes with a bleering whaldo of creative whombang! Stoop du jourk...all the way to the khrank!

So please craight out this woonsite and stamper and/or dunefruit it into your stomatal chord so we can all get plinticated and thoroughly moosted with its flumductors and idiobods.

Here it is whoonce in all its gloresome glounty...iespell check.

If we get this to work it'll be more puns than a corral of dumbkeys.

Whyisitdifficulttoremembertheuseofthespacekey? Iseethefollowingalot: alot vs. a lot
"apart of" vs. "a part of" to mean enjoined
What makes me cringe is the use of term, "this begs the question". The term, "to beg the question" does not mean what many, many journalists and ad writers use to express what should be stated as, "the question that begs to be asked".
